Building The Tallest Tower

By Aidan Brandt, Sophia Cosette Bloom, and Hunter Allen

Background Information• The tallest towers in the world are the

Petronas Towers.• Buildings are made to withstand forces, such

as: gravity, people inside, weight of building materials, and weather.

• Shake tables… shake.

Question? Will our replica towers withstand the force of a shake table, like a real tower and a earthquake?

Hypothesis• If we put the table out of

alignment by four centimeters then the towers will fall.

Materials1. Lego Bricks.2. One large Flat Lego Plate.3. Metric Ruler.4. 3- Ring Binder.5. Scissors.6. 4 Small Rubber Balls Of The Same Size.7. 2 Large Rubber Bands.8. Shake table.

Procedure 11. Cut the front and back off a three ring binder with scissors.2. Place the 2 binder covers on top of one another.3. Rubber band the 2 together by stretching a rubber band

around each end as about 1” from the edge of the board.4. Insert the rubber balls between the boards at each corner

placing them about 5cm from the edges.5. The shake table should now be assembled.6. Attach a large, flat, Lego mounting plate to the top of your

shake table.7. Make many towers with increasing height in the same pattern

every time.

Procedure 2

8. Measure each of the towers and make a data table and fill in the table with each of the heights9. Put the towers on the shake table, and then, shake the table. 10. Measure how far the bricks are out of alignment and record it in your data table.
