The Bulgarian Black Sea coast has a length of 378 km - from Cape Kartal in the north to the

estuary of the Rezovska river in the south. A straight line distance between these two endpoints is 199 km. In the west it covers a

band with width of 40-60 km, as the boundary is arbitrary. In the east our country possesses 12 -

mile maritime zone.

In the north the shore is high and steep

In geological terms the northern coast is an integral part of Placidia structure of the Danube plain. It reveals Sarmatian clays, marl, limestone, sand and limestone karst shellfish.

Rocky, steep slopes (cliffs) are typical for the areas of the Cape

Kaliakra, Cape Galata, and around Cape Emine.

Cape Kaliakra is recessed 2 km inside the sea and rises 70 m above the water. It bears its name because of the beauty and magnetism that radiates. The word Kaliakra means “beautiful cape”. Cape Kaliakra is a nature and archaeological reserve

and is one from the hundred tourist sites in Bulgaria .

On the north side of the cape is a small cove with a port called Bolata. This is the firth and narrow gorge that cuts into the beach. On both sides there are rock formations with

caves carved in them.

Cape Emine

Abrasion has sculptured beautiful rock formations

Typical forms of the coast are beach strips covering about 25% of the coast

Through the quaternary in some places the coast was sinking and the mouths of some rivers have turned into firths- the

Varna lake

Stone Forest - the generation of these strange rock formations is due to the specificity of the soil and soldering activity of karst

waters.

Cracked, water leaking karst limestone and calcareous sandstones together with opening beneath them

watertight clay and marl determine the drainage of some aquifers and active manifestation of landslides on

the Black Sea coast.

Burgas Bay is the largest bay on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast

Southern coast is a combination of rocky capes, small and cozy coves, flooded estuaries and beach strips with dune formations.
