BULLETIN No. 92.
SEPTEMBER, 1887.
The following Bulletin coutains all those fertilizers on which an analysis fee has been pblct UUI-111g the present year, as required by law. I t also contains analyses and valuations of all the ammoniated superphosphates, guanos, and special fertilizers which have been sampled b y agents of the Station since January of this year from stoclr in the hands of retail dealers in Connec- ticut.
The retail cash price of the same fertilizer as quoted by differ- ent dealers varies in some cases considerably, partly on account of differences in freight-rates, presence or absence of competition, etc. With the various dealers' quotations is also given for com- parison the manufc~cturers' r ta ten~ent of the average retail cash Price per ton in the State. The cash prices are nsnally about five per cent. lower than the credit or " time" prices.
The last colnmn of the table of analysis is "Percentage Differ- ence between Cost ancl Valuation." I t s significance and the method of calculating i t may be see; by noticing th> fourth anal- ysis in the table on page 13, No. 2046. Here the cost is $28, the valuation is $26.65, ancl the difference between them is $1.35. B y multiplying this difference, 81.35, by 100, and dividing it b y the
valuation, 826.65, we get the percentage advance of selling price over valuation, which advance should represent the costs and profits of the manufacturer in converting the raw materials into a mixed fertilizer, selling i t and collecting on his sales.
No. 2119 is an average of three closely agreeing analyses of Victor Phosphate. This is a brand made for the Apothecaries Hall Co., Waterbury, by a fertilizer company outside the State. The analyses proved that the goods were not what the Apothe- caries Hall Co. hacl guaranteed or ordered, and for that reason the price is less than it was in 1886.
OBSERVANCE OF THE FERTILIZER LAW.
