Environmental Steward Awards open t o U.S., Canadian courses

• Ciba Turf & Ornamental Products, Rain Bird and Jacobsen Division of Textron are jointly sponsoring the sec* ond annual Environmental Steward compétition.

The program is designed to recognize golf course super-intendents for their environmental excellence. Last year, it resulted in more than $12,000 being donated to golf course scholarship and research.

"We're delighted that these leading corporations are sponsoring a program that gives superintendents some well-deserved recognition for their efforts to protect the environ-ment, ** says Randy Nichols, president of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. "These awards help tell the public that we're good managers who are doing some great things for our communities."

Supers are recognized for overall excellence, and for innovative ideas such as wildlife habitat enhancement.

One national award is given in each of three categories: public, private and resort golf courses. There may also be as many as 24 regional winners. Regions are defined by the USGA Green Section, along with one Canadian region.

National winners get $500 each; regional winners receive $50. In addition, all three sponsoring companies will donate $5,000 to the GCSAA for scholarship and research.
