File extension: A file extension (or simply “(extension") is the suffix at the end of a filename that indicates what type of file it is. For example, in the filename "myreport.txt," the .TXT is the file extension.

File Type: A file format is a standard way that information is encoded for storage in a computer file. It specifies how bits are used to encode information in a digital storage medium. File formats may be either proprietary or free and may be either unpublished or open.

Where to locate file extenstions

Because you can save all of your work, or important documents/data, so that next time you need to open a saved document or data that you have saved to the computer you will be able to open it and view it.

Why files are important?

File extensions are a way of letting the user and their computer know what type of program created any given file. The file extension determines which program is used to open the file as well as what icon should be displayed for the file. It also helps you see what kind of file a certain document is by just looking at the filename.
