CAC Sustainability Commitments
CAC Mission…Our mission is to ensure that each
student achieves his or her educational and personal potential in a safe environment. We challenge all students to envision new possibilities, empower them to achieve their aspirations, and inspire them to serve a global community and contribute to a sustainable future
Master Plan VisionWe envision CAC with a unifying Middle
Eastern style to include natural stonework, arches, and grillwork. Environmental sustainability will be featured through high quality building standards and materials. Curricular needs will be accommodated through sufficiently large well-lit learning spaces. The campus will be safe and secure while maintaining its current community feel.
Sustainability at CACMore than protecting environment & energy efficient buildings it combines three closely interlinked elements…Place
Master Planning environmental considerations LEED guidelines used in building design Energy & environmental stewardship
People Healthy environment School safety & security Faculty satisfaction & retention Student engagement
Program Earth Month & Green Team Science projects
CAC Green TeamAn Organic, Bottom Up Approach
Established in 2003 by environmentally involved faculty
Faculty/staff & parents continued involved Groups extended to MS & HS student groups Originally supported by a CAC Academic
Innovation Grant Launched campus wide recycling program Working to eliminate plastic water bottles on
campus with installation of “Water Oasis.” Continually searching for opportunities for CAC to
contribute to a sustainable future.
Extension of Sustainability at CAC
Parent Organization Grants UV sun screening projects (tents, umbrellas, pergolas)
Class Gift Choices Solar clock Water oasis bottle fillers
Service Groups Boy Scout projects Campus tree mapping Playground construction
Student Gifts Solar panels

(LEED) Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design
Rating system based on accepted energy & environmental principlesAssesses unique nature of school design & constructionBenefits of Green design
Design Using LEEDFormal certification process including use of certified consultantsDesign guidelines used as design & construction criteria

CAC & LEED
Design Path chosen by CAC
Use LEED as a design tool & guidelines for new building development
Use LEED certified professionals for design development and review
Apply LEED scoring as green evaluation tool – Gold rating target
CAC’s Application of LEED Guidelines
Project Design & Construction
Site Redevelopment Rebuilding on existing site Bikes, buses, & metro available in area Site plan increased open space 5% Shared use of facility as community center Roofs and open spaces designed to reduce heat island effect
Water Efficiency Water efficient landscape Gray water system to use for irrigation Play pump designed to have kids pump irrigation water from well
using merry-go-round Trickle irrigation systems Low water use plumbing fixtures
Application of LEED Guidelines at CACProject Design & Construction continued
Energy & Atmosphere High energy performance requirement for construction materials &
quality Solar panels installed for daytime supply RO water system & high efficiency drinking fountains Central AC plant with multiple speed cooling towers & high
efficiency refrigerant High efficiency hand dryers , time controlled drinking fountains, Commissioning program to maintain mechanical systems peak
performance Materials & Resources
Campus wide recycling of paper, plastic, batteries, & printer cartridges
Recycle & reuse of multiple materials from demolished buildings Construction shuttering materials reused floor to floor Appropriate construction scraps screened & used for backfill Predominant quantity of local Egyptian materials Trees cleared for new site relocated in landscape plan or sawn for
wood details in new buildings
Application of LEED Guidelines at CACProject Design & Construction continued
Indoor Environmental Quality Weather sealed classrooms with filtered ventilation air Classrooms designed for low reverberation rates & good acoustics
to help with learning All grade level classrooms with significant day-lighting and views of
campus Classroom lighting controlled by sensors for occupancy &
brightness Exterior walls insulated with expanded foam and air spaces Finish materials chosen for low emission & reduced carpet in
classrooms Smoking free campus
Innovation & Design Process LEED accredited architects used for Master Plan & building design School works as a teaching tool with solar clocks, outdoor classrooms,
exposed & labeled building components, description of design & materials, distance/elevation markers, Egyptian Tortoise project, solar panel production panel, solar hot water projects, & on…
- Natural cooling from prevailing wind
- Sun screening in gathering and circulation spaces
- Adaptive use of existing buildings
- Preservation of green spaces encouraged
- Alternative transportation
- Quality Construction for reduced energy consumption
CAC Sustainable Facilities
Initiatives began in 2006 – Maintenance, Transportation, Housing & Janitorial.
Started with a whole campus safety audit
Maintenance Safety training program started Equipment safety audit Plumbing fixture assessment for water conservation
Transportation Driver training program started Fleet converting to light, sun reflective colors (from burgundy
to off white) Exploring the conversion of fleet to natural gas
CAC Sustainable Facilities, cont.
Janitorial Standards for agents used in cleaning Standards for materials used for pest control & landscape
spraying Campus wide AC usage procedures (timing and temperature)
Housing Double Pane windows installed to reduce energy consumption
and improve sound proofing Local sourcing of all furniture and renovation materials
Weekly operational manager meetings include sustainability as a standing topic.
Measure/Report/Manage/Control
Measurable Outcomes:• Water usage• Energy– Electricity– Natural Gas– Gasoline/Diesel
• Waste generation– recyclables
Financial SustainabilityWhat does a financially sustainable organization look like?
•Income– Tuition– Other
• Development• Summer Camp• Earned Interest• Rentals• Fees
– Busing, Dining, etc.
