The Definition “ Subaltern”.

A subaltern is someone with a low ranking in a social, political, or other hierarchy. It can also mean someone who has been marginalized or oppressed.

Antonio Gramsci:

Subaltern, meaning ‘of inferior rank’, is a term adopted by Antonio Gramsci to refer to those groups in society who are subject to the hegemony of the ruling classes. Subaltern classes may include peasants, workers and other groups denied access to ‘hegemonic’ power.

Gayatri Chakravoty Spivak

Can the Subaltern Speak?" (1988) by Gayatri Spivak relates to the manner in which western cultures investigate other cultures. Spivak uses the example of the Indian Sati practice of widow suicide, however the main significance of "Can the Subaltern Speak?"

A Tempest was originally wrote in 1969 in French by Amie Cesaire.

It is translated into English in 1985 by Richard miller. It is written as postcolonial response to ‘The Tempest’ by Shakespeare.

As we all know that caliban is a marginalized character and some of the people like Prospero rulings over him. so here we see that power is played vital role in this play .The Ami cesaire give voice of the marginalized and put center in the text.
