New Accountability: Part of California’s Evolving School Improvement System

• Equity: funding based on student needs. Expectation that all succeed.

• Continuous improvement process uses reports to identify LEAs for assistance or intervention.

• Accountability reports with state and local indicators, identifying strengths and areas in need of improvement.

• Local control over spending plus responsibility to address state priorities.

Work in progress – still building and refining.

Advantages of detailed information being available to all parts of the school community and to the public:

• Improvement work within the education system is starting from shared, commonly defined information.

• Members of the public can “see for themselves.”

• Shared information is the basis for constructive conversations.

Transparency

28

Informing the Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP)

Data within the dashboard can identify problem areas, find bright spots, and start conversations. • This student group has much lower graduation rates • Math achievement seems to be a district-wide problem • School X is having the best results with English learners

Data helps your district and school create specific goals and measure progress toward goals • Reduce suspensions by 10% per year for 3 years • Raise college and career readiness by 5% per year

29

LCAP Cycles & Data

START WITH THE PLAN

• Define areas of need

• Engage stakeholders

• Create a plan to address those needs

• Define specific goals to measure progress

IMPLEMENT, REVIEW, IMPROVE

• Implement plans

• Check progress

• Revise plans if necessary

• Implement revised plans
