ANNOUNCEMENTS
The flowers in the sanctuary are given to the Glory of God on this Mother’s
Day and in honor of all mothers and all those who nurture children, by the
Board of Elders.
The sympathy of the congregation is expressed to the family and friends of
Sister Frances Cornwell Greene, who entered the more immediate presence
of the Savior on April 24. Sister Greene was the grandmother of Sister Lisa
Davis (husband, Spencer). The funeral service for Sister Greene was held
yesterday in Chapel Hill, NC.
Today is the Fourth Sunday of Easter and Good Shepherd Sunday. We
continue our celebration of the glorious news of the Resurrection of our
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! The name of Good Shepherd Sunday derives
from the Gospel reading in John 10:11. In this reading, Christ is described
as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life for his sheep. Pictured on the
front of your bulletin, the Good Shepherd stained glass window in our
sanctuary was given to the glory of God by the Women’s Bible Class in
1924. The Easter season continues until the Day of Pentecost which will be
celebrated on June 9.

Good Shepherd Sunday
Mother’s Day
May 12, 2019
We welcome all members and guests to our service today on this
Fourth Sunday of Easter and on this day when we observe Good
Shepherd Sunday and celebrate Mother’s Day. We are glad that you
have come to worship at Calvary this morning.
Please make a special effort to greet those around you in the spirit of
Christian fellowship. As the black Ritual of Friendship pad is passed,
kindly take a moment to write down your name, address, and phone
number. During the prelude, you are invited to enter a spirit of
reverence and quiet reflection as we prepare to worship the Lord. We
kindly request that you silence all electronic devices.
We thank Ron Bell for his service as our Lay Reader this Sunday!
After worship today, the Men’s Fellowship will serve cookies and lemonade
on the front lawn in celebration of Mother’s Day. This is our Second Sunday event for the month of May. Our Second Sunday observances will
resume in September.
The church-wide Calvary Congregational Retreat will be held at Higgins
Lodge, Laurel Ridge, next weekend, May 17-19. Please sign up soon if you
have not already done so. Please note…for those who are unable to attend
this retreat, Sunday school and worship will be held at Calvary next
Sunday, May 19.
Next Sunday, May 19, during the Sunday school hour, there will be a
special presentation in Fellowship Hall. Hannah Crim, a Campus Crusade
for Christ missionary in East Asia, will be here to share her experiences.
Hannah has dedicated the last 8 years to following God's call inviting and
teaching young people in that area of the world to know and follow Jesus.
For those who are not going to be at Laurel Ridge, please plan to join us in
Fellowship Hall at 9:45 a.m. next Sunday.
On Sunday, June 2, we will have our annual Youth and Children Sunday
and Graduate Recognition Day. On this special day of worship, we will be
acknowledging all those who have completed the major milestone of
graduation from high school, college, or graduate school. As soon as
possible, please let the church office know of anyone in your family who
will be graduating from high school, college, or graduate school. This will
give us the opportunity to announce graduate information in our church
publications, including the bulletin and our weekly and monthly newsletters.
In addition to the names of graduates, please provide school/college
information, graduation date, and any future plans for the students following
graduation. We look forward to the June 2 service and to acknowledging
and congratulating all our graduates. (Thank you to all those who have
provided this information already!)
Volunteers needed! Renovation of room 120, which will be the new
location for the New Life Class, is underway. If anyone is interested in
spending some time, and enjoying the fellowship, in painting this new
classroom, please let Chese Trivette know. Little experience is required!
Paint and supplies will be provided. If you are able, there will be some high
work using ladders. Simply contact Chese to sign up for this important
volunteer work, and thank you in advance!
Renovation of the Calvary organ is expected to begin sometime near the
end of May or the first of June. Renovation work will take approximately 3-
4 months during which the organ will not be usable. The sanctuary piano
will be utilized for worship during this time. We are grateful to the
generous donors who have made this renovation possible. We pray that this
necessary repair work will proceed well, and we look forward to hearing our
treasured, historic instrument again!
The closing date and time for the June 2019 “Connection” Newsletter is
this Wednesday, May 15, at 4:30 p.m.

My Sheep Hear My Voice
I was blessed to grow up in a neighborhood with many children my age and
plenty to keep us busy playing outside. We had woods nearby that led to a
creek that flowed into a mighty river. There were farm fields to wander and
railroad tracks nearby to walk as we looked for treasures. We were free to
roam about all day, but there was a strict rule that we had to be home in time
for supper. Often our parents would call out or whistle from the back porch
to let us know supper was ready.
One of my best friends, Don, lived across the street. His name sounds like
mine, John—especially when you are busy playing and your mothers are
calling you to supper. So in order to buy ourselves a little more time to play,
Don and I had this brilliant plan. If his mom called, he would say he thought
he heard John, and if my mom called, I would say I thought I heard Don.
Well, I don’t think our plan ever really worked. Actually, even though I
couldn’t be sure whose name I heard, I still knew—in fact I was certain—
that it was my mother’s voice calling me to come home.
We live in a world filled with noises and influences that can overwhelm us
and distract us from our faith. Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice. I know
them, and they follow me” (John 10:27). But how many times do we pretend
not to hear or cannot hear because of our worldly concerns? The good news
is that Jesus is still calling. We belong to Jesus and always will, by the gift
of eternal life through him. This is our hope and our joy, that even in the
midst of all the noise and distraction, Jesus still claims us as God’s own, and
calls us by name to come home.
