Comparisons

Form: Woorden van 1 lettergreep:

◦ adjective + -er / –est Fast – faster (than) – (the) fastest

Woorden van 2 of meer lettergrepen: ◦ more / most + adjective

Beautiful – more beautiful (than) – (the) most beautiful

Gebruik: vergrotende / overtreffende trap

Don’t forget… Adjectives ending in y:

angry – angrier (than) – (the) angriest

Irregular adjectives: Bad – worse (than) – (the) worst Good – better (than) – (the) best Far – further (than) – (the) furthest Many – more (than) – (the) most

You sometimes have to doubble the consonant:

big – bigger (than) – (the) biggest

Present Continuous Vorm:

◦ vorm van “to be” (am / is / are) + hele werkwoord + -ING

Wanneer gebruik je het?Rule: We often use the present continuous to talk

about plans and arrangements for the future.

Waaraan herken je het? (signaalwoorden)◦ Tomorrow, next week/month, in … days’ time, the day

after tomorrow, the week after next

I am playing tennis tomorrow afternoon

Vragende vorm: Het onderwerp komt tussen de twee

werkwoorden in: ◦ Am I doing Home Economics this year? ◦ Are you watching … ? ◦ Is he/she/it talking … ? ◦ Are we rolling … ?◦ Are you singing … ? ◦ Are they baking … ? (let op: Géén bakeing) ?

Let op uitzonderingen:

Have --> having NOT haveing!! Make --> making Put --> putting (de ‘t’ verdubbeld) Get --> getting Dig --> digging (de ‘t’ verdubbeld)

Als een werkwoord op een -e eindigt, dan vervalt de -e als ING wordt toegevoegd.

Will / won’t Vorm:

◦ will (not) + hele werkwoord

Wanneer gebruik je het?Rule: We use will (‘ll) or will not (won’t) + base form to

make predictions about the future.

Waaraan herken je het? (signaalwoorden)◦ Tomorrow, next week/month, in … days’ time, the day after

tomorrow, the week after next

We will all be dead if a space ship hits planet Earth.

Choose from: sleep – get – drive – spend– play – watch – stay – ask

Too + adjective Vorm:

Adverb Vorm:

◦ adjective + ly

Wanneer gebruik je het?Rule: Adverbs describe adjectives and verbs. To form a

regular adverb, we usually add –ly to the adjective. If the adjective ends in –y, change –y to -i before adding –ly.

Waaraan herken je het?◦ Het zegt iets over een werkwoord

I play the piano wonderfully.

Adjective <--> Adverb Adjective Zegt iets over een zelfstandig

naamwoord (noun): a beautiful house

Adverb = adjective + ly Geeft aan hoe iets gebeurt:

I slowly walked home

Heavy --> heavily Fast – fast Good – well Early – early Late – late (not lately: that has a different

meaning!) Hard – hard (nor hardly: that has a

different meaning!)

Let op bij deze adverbs:

An adverb says something about: ◦ A verb: Ian normally acts like a fool ◦ An adjective: A perfectly normal house Don’t forget…The form of ‘to be’ (am/is/are/was/were)

◦ My neighbour was angry. (not: angrily)◦ Your father is wonderful (not: wonderfully)

1. That motorbike is very beautiful / beautifully.

2. I think Michael Jackson sounds like a real / really good singer.

3. I personal / personally hate Hollywood movies, but I suppose that’s personal / personally.

4. Ally secret / secretly laughed when the policeman asked Toby for his papers.
