The Year 6 boys enjoyed the skipping aspect
Eagan Winsall
Josh Hope could skip with 28 skipping ropes
The Prep and Year 6 Buddies ran their cross country event together
ast Friday provided us with perfect conditions for our annual Prep – Year 6 Cross Country Carnival. All students did a magnificent job running the new course, that was held at the Frederick Street Sporting Complex.
Whilst students were completing their events, Jump Rope for Heart was taking place on the netball courts. Students skipped along to music, showed their speed in the speed skipping section and got together with friends for the long rope skipping. All students enjoyed the day and were exceptionally well behaved. Thanks to all parents who were able to help out, we could not have done it without you!
Warren Attrill, Prep-Year 6 Sport Coordinator
Our Mission: Camperdown College will provide exemplary teaching and learning programs within excellent facilities which foster school pride,
aspiration and persistence to achieve high levels of learning for all students.
From the Principal’s Desk…
A strong partnership between school and
home is known to be a very important
factor contributing to students’ learning
and wellbeing. To support this partnership
and provide further opportunities for
parents to be involved in their children’s
education, Camperdown College will
shortly be giving parents access to our
online management system called Compass. A key aim is to
improve the frequency and quality of feedback about your
child’s learning.
Teachers are already using Compass to mark rolls each
lesson and to record details of upcoming school events and
excursions. Parents will shortly be provided with access and
will be able to use the parent portal to:
View up-to-date class and school attendance
information
Approve or enter upcoming or past absences for your
son/daughter
Download, print and approve upcoming excursions
Update your registered email address and mobile
phone number
Access information regarding upcoming events and
news
Access your child's reports.
Later this year you will also be able to see the following
information on Compass:
Learning cycles your child is presently working on
Regular feedback about your child’s learning attributes
(such as persistence, behaviour, preparation and
organisation)
Regular feedback about your child’s achievement
The information provided to you through Compass will
gradually take the place of the traditional end of semester
report, although parents will still receive a summary report
mid-year and at the end of each school year.
We will shortly be sending home an online service
agreement and consent form for parents to sign and return,
which is the first step in us creating a parent account for
you. Once your consent form has been returned, log on
details will be provided and you can begin to use
Compass. Please look out for this documentation and
make contact with myself or the campus Assistant
Principal if you have any questions or concerns.
Our Education Week Open Night next Wednesday 18th
May will commence at 5.30pm in the Senior Campus
Library with an introduction to Compass. We are looking
forward to talking with you about how Compass can
enhance the school – home partnership and streamline
communication. I hope many of you are able to attend and
stay on for refreshments, Senior Campus tours and Junior
Campus open classrooms.
In facilities news, our Parents & Friends are presently
planning for the installation of the first pieces of new
playground equipment at the Junior Campus, as progress
towards the $30,000 fundraising target has been excellent.
The Grounds and Buildings committee is also considering
designs and costings for an undercover area to provide wet
weather play space. At the Senior Campus, demolition
work has now been completed with the removal of the
third and final portable building last weekend. Signage for
the Grimwade Library has been commissioned and we
hope to have the first stage of this completed by Open
Night. See you there!

Examination Timetable:
All Year 10/11 students will be sitting their exams commencing Monday 30th
May. Students have received a copy of
their timetable.
Year 10 Careers Camp:
Year 10 students enjoyed their Careers Camp. The students mastered the art of ice skating with lots of thrills and
spills along the way. They enjoyed riding the Melbourne Star and taking in the sites of the city and wharf areas. The
Salvation Army tour opened the students’ eyes as to the hardships that some people face. Highlights were looking
through the coaches and corporate boxes at Etihad Stadium, seeing Mick Malthouse who was filming a segment for Foxtel and also
seeing John Jarratt (star of Wolf Creek) and having their photographs taken with him at Federation Square. The Careers Expo
provided the students with lots of sound career advice and they enjoyed collecting lots of giveaways such as pens, earphones and
pamphlets. Students also managed to navigate their way around the public transport system and find their way to three different
suburbs in small groups.
Thank you to Ben McKenzie and Fiona Crowle for accompanying the students on this camp and to Miss Jubb for the organisation of
the camp.
Education Week:
Next week is Education Week. On Wednesday 18th
May, we will be celebrating the launch of Compass, our new home – school
communication system from 5.30pm in the Senior Campus Library. The Junior Campus will then be open from 6.30pm to host an
array of activities based on this year’s theme Technology. Create your Future. It is hoped that many families will drop by the Senior
Campus to look at the new facilities and join in a light meal prior enjoying the activities on offer at the Junior Campus.
NAPLAN:
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for students in Year 7 and 9 were conducted this week.
For the writing component, students had to write a persuasive piece titled Simply the Best based on the best movie, television show or
performance they had seen.
Fiddlers Busy:
Congratulations to Fiddle Fingers (Tim Fagan, Jordan Watson, Jack Leonard-Pekin and Otto Leonard-Pekin) who have been
performing a number of gigs throughout the south west. They recently performed at Music in Mortlake and Fifteen Minutes of Fame
at Crossley. They are currently gearing up for the Robbie Burns Festival. It is always a delight to hear them rehearsing at school with
Mrs Pugh with the vibrant sound reverberating down the corridors.
Junior Netball and Football:
An enthusiastic bunch of Year 7 – 9 students participated in the interschool netball and football competition at Terang last week.
Coached by Miss Bloomfield, the netballers made it to the grand final which was a fantastic achievement going down to MRC in a
tightly contested battle. The boys also had a great day out, showed continual improvement throughout the day and responded well to
the sage advice of coach, Ian Gordon. Annabel Lucas and Nicholas Jones helped out with scoring and umpiring and are to be
applauded for their efforts. Thanks must go to Ian for giving up his time to coach the team and to Miss McLennan for helping out.
Cross Country:
Due to wet conditions, the Cross Country was postponed last week. The event will be held tomorrow afternoon.
GAT:
Students studying Year 12 subjects have received a pamphlet about the GAT (General Achievement Test) which will be conducted on
Tuesday 7th
June. There is important information for students to be aware of in relation to permitted materials, timing and format of
the tests. Closer to the date we will conduct an information/practice session for students.
Congratulations:
Congratulations to Lauren McIlveen who entered an essay in the 2016 Vietnam Veterans War History Competition late last term.
Lauren has been notified that she has been included in a panel of students from which the final student tour group for the overseas
study tour to Vietnam in September will be chosen. This is a fantastic achievement considering lots of entries were received. We wish
Lauren all the best when she attends the student panel at the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance Education Centre later this month to
participate in a team building and ice breaker workshop. Following the workshop, the final student tour group will be selected by the
competition assessment panel who will be present during the workshop, and students will be advised of the results. Special thanks
must go to Mrs Charles for mentoring Lauren for this competition.

Mother’s Day:
What a wonderful morning it was last Friday as we celebrated Mother’s Day. Our hardworking Parents & Friends
Association put on a beautiful Mother’s Day Breakfast for our students and their families to enjoy. It was an
exceptional turn out of people on the day and an enjoyable time was had by all. Later on the same day, students in
Prep – Year 6 were once again given the opportunity to purchase a gift to give to their mum, grandmother or special
person on Mother’s Day. Well done and thank you to the team of parents and friends who willingly devote their time
and energy for the benefit of our school community.

Education Week:
Next week is Education Week and a time for us to appreciate all those who contribute to a child's development, learning and life.
Educators are not only teachers; every parent, grandparent, sibling and community member contributes to the learning of our children.
Please come and help us celebrate our wonderful school next Wednesday 18th
May.
In the morning from 9.00am – 10.00am, all kindergarten parents are invited to see the Prep room in action, meet the teaching staff,
gain an understanding of the current Prep reading program and have a tour of both the classroom and Junior Campus.
Our Open Night commences at the Senior Campus at 5.30pm where we will be launching Compass, our new home – school
communication system and serving light refreshments. All families are then encouraged to make their way to the Junior Campus and
wander through our classrooms. Each room will showcase student learning and visitors will have the opportunity to participate in
structured activities based on this year’s Education Week theme Technology. Create your Future. Hope to see you all there!
Prep – Year 6 Cross Country:
What perfect weather we had last Friday for our annual Cross Country/Jump Rope for Heart event. As the sun shone, all students in
Prep – Year 6 made their way around the new course at Frederick Street. The tennis courts were bustling with students keen to
showcase their skipping skills as part of our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser. Congratulations to all students who participated in this
event. It was great weather for spectators and competitors alike. It was fantastic to see the support and encouragement the students
gave to each other. Congratulations to the Manifold house who were the overall winners on the day. Thanks must go to Mr Attrill for
his organisation of the event and to all parents and grandparents who came along to offer their support to the children.
Special Welcome:
This week we have welcomed two new students to our Camperdown College community! We welcome Amelia Gili to Year 2 and
Mackenzie Borland to Year 4. We are delighted to welcome you both the Junior Campus and wish you a long and successful
educational journey.
NAPLAN:
The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests for students in Year 3 and 5 were conducted this week.
For the writing component, students had to write a narrative titled Imagine. Students were asked to imagine if a character found an
object that made something amazing happen. It was pleasing to see the students’ creativity and the use of VCOP elements in their
stories. The reports on each student’s achievements in these tests will be provided to parents later in the year.
Pupil Free Day: School Council has identified Friday 10
th June as a Pupil Free Day for reporting and assessment purposes. There is no school on this
day. Please be advised that this adjoins the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Keys Please is a short, 50 minute session aimed at helping you, the learner driver, enjoy the learning-to-drive experience, pass your
licence tests and become a safe and competent driver. At the same time, it will help your supervising drivers (parents, older
brothers/sisters, uncles, aunts, whoever) tackle their role with confidence while avoiding the stress that can sometimes be a part of it.
Learning to drive should be a fun, exciting time – not a scary or dull chore. We’ll show you how to make the most of it. Even though
it’s during the school day, parents are encouraged to join us.
Year 10 students will be attending in the Senior Campus Library

Thanks so much Country Women’s Association!
On Tuesday, a very big thank you was given to a number of representatives from the Camperdown branch of the Country Women’s
Association (CWA) by the youngest members of our College – our Prep students. Earlier this year, ladies from the CWA provided our
Prep students with thirty chair bags for use within the Prep classroom. Each chair bag had been measured, assembled and sewed by
ladies from the Camperdown branch with the finished product kindly donated to our school for use by our very appreciative Prep
students.
On Tuesday, students were able to personally say thank you to the ladies who visited the classroom to see the chair bags in their new
home. Students were excited to share how much they loved them and what they were storing in them. The Prep students presented the
ladies with a class photo, chocolates, a card and flowers. A very special thank you was also given to Bev Arnold who was pivotal to
the project and the time and effort she put into making the chair bags was greatly appreciated. Camperdown College staff then
provided morning tea for the ladies as a show of thanks on behalf of our College’s community.

YYeeaarr 99//1100 DDrraammaa EElleeccttiivvee EEmmeerrssiioonn DDaayy On 21
st April, Year 9/10 Drama elective students travelled to Melbourne for a day of
emersion in the Performing Arts. The day started early with a sleepy trip on the train
followed by our first activity Creating Radio Ads at The Channel, the educational section
of the Melbourne Performing Arts Centre. The students worked on scripting, creating
character voices and recording their ads with fantastic results. We discovered some
budding DJ’s in our group!
After a relaxed lunch people watching in the PAC fore court, we made our way to the
Melbourne Theatre Company production Peddling at the Southbank Theatre. Peddling is
a powerful and innovative solo performance supported by an incredible percussive
accompaniment that tells the story of one youth’s journey into homelessness and his
search to find the truth. This was a fabulous opportunity for our students to experience
something different. To conclude the day, we were given a guided tour of the PAC
theatre areas. Again, it was interesting to see the different theatre environments and to
hear about how they are used. Going to the VIP lounge area was a major highlight for the
day!
We were fortunate to receive funding through Melbourne Theatre Company and the First
Call fund via the PAC. This allowed our students to participate in such a valuable day of
experiences without the restriction of having to pay for the cost of travel and workshops.

Year 11 Charlton Camp For the second year running, Year 11 students were given the
opportunity to attend the Charlton Driving School in Charlton.
On Tuesday 26th
and Wednesday 27th
April, Sue Maskell and I
took an eager bunch of drivers to the school where they were
instructed in all aspects of safe driving. Topics covered
included general operation of the car, passing, hill starts,
parking, night driving and alcohol and drug safety.
The eighteen students were then split up for their individual
driving instruction and theory sessions. The students swapped
between driving and theory every forty-five minutes, so there
was plenty of time behind the wheel. The course ran over two
days including a night drive and was delivered by highly
experienced staff. The weather was perfect for camping and
we enjoyed local hospitality at the East Charlton Hotel where
we ate dinner.
Students from both last year and this year praised the content
of the course and highly recommend it to next year’s students.
We have already booked it!

Ever wondered about what a collection of words about a topic might look like as a
picture?
Our Prep – Year 2 students have recently been exploring the idea of brainstorming as
preparation for story writing. They've had lots and lots of great ideas to share on too many
topics to mention here and have learned how to turn them into word clouds.
Try it for yourself at either:

YYeeaarr 1100 CCaarreeeerrss CCaammpp It was with much excitement that seventeen students and two
staff members boarded the train to the big smoke last week. Once
we arrived in Melbourne, we caught the first of an endless
number of trams to the JMC Academy in South Melbourne.
Students were introduced to the available courses such as
animation, song-writing, audio engineering and musical
production. After lunch, we ventured to the Docklands precinct
for a trio of activities. First we tested our skills on the ice rink:
Mr McKenzie and I stepping in as Torvill and Dean. Oh, and the
students were pretty handy on the ice too! From there we took to
the skies aboard the Melbourne Observatory Wheel. Students
were able to get a bird’s eye view of the urban sprawl that is
Melbourne. Last, but not least was a tour of Etihad Stadium.
We were shown around the coaches box, the media room, where the AFL tribunal convenes and took a tentative step onto the
fake grass of the boundary line. Unfortunately we could not visit the change rooms as The Recruit television program was
filming at the time, but seeing Mick Malthouse arriving to the ground offset this! The first day was rounded off with a
massive pizza and pasta dinner in Lygon Street.
Thursday morning saw students participate in a Salvation Army tour, which aims to raise awareness of the plight faced by
homeless people. Students were tested to see how they would survive on $30 a day. From here we moved onto Caulfield
Racecourse where The Age Careers Expo was being held. Students were given the opportunity to visit a number of displays
to gather information on future career choices and discuss their options. Next on our jam packed camp was a tour of the
Victorian Institute of Sport. Kelsey Brown from the Melbourne Vixens led us on the tour of the facilities and answered a
number of questions about her training at the VIS before we took another tram ride to Stalactites restaurant for souvlaki and
chips. Whilst waiting to go on the Lantern Ghost Tour at Federation Square, students were thrilled to see John Jarratt (Wolf
Creek) and took the opportunity to have their photo taken with him. Unfortunately we did not see any ghosts but learned
about some of Melbourne’s dark past and shady characters. By the time we got back to our accommodation at Melbourne
Discovery, everybody was exhausted and slept soundly.
Students were to complete their public transport activity Friday morning and for the first year in quite a while, there were no
phone calls from students who had become geographically challenged. After lunch we boarded the train home to
Camperdown, which was a very quiet trip indeed! Students always remember the Year 10 Careers Camp as a wonderful
experience and reminisce for days afterwards. Once again they are to be congratulated for their conduct on this camp and
displaying genuine gratitude to those people who made it possible.
Fiona Crowle, Year 10 Science Teacher
YYeeaarr 11 –– 44 HHoocckkeeyy CClliinniiccss Students in Year 1 – 4 participated in a hockey clinic last week that was run by Hockey Victoria. The students learned lots of
important hockey skills and rules. They enjoyed learning how to hold the stick correctly and how to dribble the hockey ball.
Everyone loved playing hocktapus! It was fantastic to see everyone getting involved and trying something new.

HHSSSSSSAA JJuunniioorr FFoooottbbaallll aanndd NNeettbbaallll Last Thursday 5
th May, Year 7 – 9 students travelled to Terang to compete in the
HSSSA Junior Football and Netball round robin. We entered one football team and one
Year 8 netball team (pictured left). It was beautiful weather for the football with dry
conditions and although unfortunately we didn’t come away with a win, the boys
enjoyed a fun day out and were lucky to be coached by Ian Gordon who gave up his
time to come to Terang for the day. I would like to say a big thank you to Ian and also
Miss McLennan and Nicholas Jones who helped out with the duties of the day.
The netballers had a tremendous day out finishing the day in second place, being
defeated by MRC who they went on to play again in the grand final. Although they lost,
they put up a very competitive fight with Olivia Maskell shooting very accurately in
goals all day. Thank you to Annabel Lucas who also came as a helper on the day.
Overall it was a fun day out and students need to be commended for their participation
and behaviour.

Brainstorm Productions
Presents
On Monday 16th
May, Brainstorm Productions, Australia’s largest educational touring company, will be presenting the live play, Sticks
& Stones for Camperdown College Senior Campus students. Sticks & Stones forms part of our wellbeing curriculum and the program
has been developed in consultation with teachers, psychologists, and real-life student experiences. The methodology of the program is
safe, supportive and non-judgemental and designed to provide students with positive and useful tools that they can use in their
everyday lives.
Seen and enjoyed by more than 1.7 million students and performed by two highly trained actors, Sticks & Stones is a fearless
exploration of violence and aggression and its devastating consequences. The actors who, as young role models, genuinely connect
with the audience and make it clear that masculinity and violence are NOT one and the same. Major themes explored are Bullying,
Cyber Bullying, Ethical Cyber Behaviour, Friendships, Empathy, Co-operation, Resilience, Exclusion, Violence, Domestic Violence
and Sexual Harassment.
The performance is followed by an after-show discussion that examines student’s attitudes, challenges stereotypes and aims to
breakdown any pre-conceived ideas about violence being acceptable. Students will explore strategies around aggressive behaviour,
resolving conflict and Safe and Ethical Cyber use.
