FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What Is CANA?
CANA Marriage Renewal Movement is an organized action of married couples working towards a common goal of drawing on marriage as a means to evangelize the home, the parish, the workplace and the society as a whole. We believe that the transformation of the human environment starts with Christ's primacy in relationships, the most basic of which is the marriage. At the parish level, CMRM is known as CANA Community which is comprised of all couples who have attended the
CANA weekend retreat.
How Do We Join CANA?
The entry point to CMRM is a weekend retreat called CANA in Galilee. It is a three-day experience designed to revi-talize the interpersonal growth of the couple towards each other and towards God. Through a particular method of communication and dialogue, they discover their coupleness and couple power in a new way.
Who Is CANA For?
It is for couples who desire to enhance their relationship regardless of the present circumstances in their marriage (good or bad) but who believe that their relationship can still improve and become more fruitful.
Is The CANA Retreat Only For
Couples Having Problems?
Definitely not. The CANA weekend have been known to benefit couples
having problems as well as those whose marriage relationships are already doing great. Regardless of the presence or absence of marital issues, couples that take the retreat with an open mind and willingness to explore the deep recesses of their hearts benefit the most from the experience.
Can CANA Save A Couple Who Is On The Verge Of Breaking Up Or Who Has Already
Broken Up?
The CANA retreat is in no way a ‘miracle cure’ for marital problems. However, what the weekend guarantees is a positive transfor-mation of marital relationships as long as the couple is willing to be transformed in the love of God and each other. Countless couples on the verge of separation received the grace of
transformation through the CANA weekend.
Will There Be Confrontations Or Open
Discussions Of Our Marital Problems?
CANA does not allow confrontations between spouses or the public airing of marital issues. Instead, the couple is encouraged to focus on each other as a couple, and not as individuals. The weekend is focused on deepening the love between husband and wife through private, loving dialogues that lead to mutual understanding and healing.
Who Conducts The Retreat?
A series of talks, both instructional and experiential, is given by a team of couples and a priest as moderator and Spiritual Director. This team presents a technique of communi-cation that enables a couple to take a good look at major areas in their relationship. The entire program is presented in English.
How Long Are The Retreats?
The CANA weekend retreat starts on Friday evening with registration and orientation at 6:00 pm and ends with a Mass on Sunday evening.
How Much Does It Cost?
Currently, the donation requested is $300 per couple. This fee covers hotel accommodations, meals, snacks and other retreat costs. No one is refused the opportunity to attend the retreat because of lack of funds, but prior arrangement must be made. The services of the priest and presenting couples are free.
Do You Need To Be Catholic To
Attend?
The program is Catholic in its entire form and content. A Catholic marriage is required of all candidates who wish to attend. However, the Spiritual Director occasionally exempts couples from this requirement under special circumstan-ces. Please make arrangements to refer your case to him if necessary.
