Car Simulators 3
In 1976 Dr. Reiner Foerst founded our company.
He was a simulation theorist with the at that time
visionary idea of developing driving simulators
to train novice drivers. Since then the Dr.-Ing.
Reiner Foerst GmbH develops and produces
driving simulators for traffic safety, driver train-
ing, promotion and research.
We produce a variety of simulators which are
true to their „real“ prototypes, robust, mobile,
easily manageable, maintenance-free, modifi-
able, and upgradeable by means of software
programs.
Our standard truck and bus simulators are built
with single-seated operator stands. They come
with various types of sight-systems based on
LCDs or projectors. Optionally, the simulator
can be improved by propping it up on two over-
square motion-supports patented by us which
simulate G forces in a certain scope by moving
length- and crosswise. The image generator is
based on a fast-working personal computer
with special interface hardware. We developed
a large variety of scenarios for crucial traffic
situations, as well as educational computer
instructions and evaluations.
Additionally there is a control desk informing the
instructor about the current educational level of
each pupil and enabling the instructor to inter-
vene.
Construction of the cabin, software, graphics,
and drive engineering are subject to constant
refinement. We are partners in various projects
of the European Commission. Our products are
sold worldwide.

Passenger Car Simulators –Traffic Education in a new Dimension
More and more driving schools realise the advantage of
driving simulators for today's driver's training. Training on
a simulator is a cost-effective way to teach and an
attractive one for the trainee who is able to learn how to
handle a vehicle in a stress-free manner.
However, basic driver's training is not the only aspect in
favour of Foerst simulators – there are a lot more extras
making it a high-speed crowd puller. Foerst software
enables the trainer to convey how to drive in an energy-
saving and eco-friendly way and, what's more, to con-
front his trainee with various traffic-related challenges.
The police, the ADAC, as well as other associations
working in the field of traffic safety have already discov-
ered these options of training and use the simulator's
possibilities to closely demonstrate the dangers of drunk
driving to drivers. Various evaluation possibilities as there
are logfiles, replays, prints, as well as the posibility to
interlink the simulator to measurement devices make for
a really good training performance on a Foerst company
car simulator.

Eco-driving –Easy on the Purse and on the Environment
“Changing gears in good time gets you farther”
is the motto of intelligent eco-driving.
Energy-efficient, environmentally sensible, and
relaxed driving may substantially reduce a car's
petrol consumption, and is, at the same time,
environmentally sensible as your CO2 emission
will also be reduced.
In addition, well trained and proactive driving
reduces stress for the driver and wear on the
vehicle while increasing traffic safety.
Foerst car simulators can be equipped with
special software modules beating the traditional
possibilities for eco-driving in real vehicles by far
in many points.
The “Eco-driving” software works with shell
scheme and time diagrams which inform the
instructor about selected gear, operating point of
the motor, number of gearshifts, rpm, speed,
consumption and their respective average.
At the end of the drive the instructor is given a
detailed evaluation of the drive, as well as infor-
mation on the particular petrol consumption in
terms of an “eco”-classification figure.
Additional information:
Brief description:The driver is offered various routes which he then has to masterin the most economic manner. Driving takes about 5 min. perroute. After that, the instructor is able to give hints on how toenhance the trainee's driving. At last, the “eco”-classification figure informs about the trainee's driving qualities. Here, theaverage speed is related to the average petrol consumption.

Using the replay-function the driving sequence
can be read off the diagram including all specific
data to be evaluated step by step, together with
the trainee.
For repeatable roadway arrangements the sur-
rounding can be set up on the menue to best
approximate your simulated eco-training to real
traffic.

Alcohol Simulations –Wiggly Lines at the Push of a Button
Estimated by the German Technical Control
Board, every second road death is caused by
drunken drivers. In a most practical way the
Foerst company software permits a close view
on the effects and risks of drunk driving.
As an example, a trainee drives a short distance
under normal conditions, then the effects of
alcohol on his vision are generated on the screen
and a time shift is switched on. Due to this
delayed the car automatically “wiggles” and the
driver has to struggle to avoid any obstacles
which may appear.
Due to a dramatically increased reaction time
when driving under the influence of alcohol it is
nearly impossible to perform an emergency
braking. On the screen both blurred vision and
tunnel vision are generated to demonstrate the
effects of alcohol on your vision.
In addition, this module can also demonstrate
the effects of different alcoholic beverages on
your driving. “Sober”, the trainee will drive a on a
rural road towards a pub where he can then
choose between different amounts of alcoholic
beverages to drink. When continuing to drive he
will then be demonstrated the immediate effects
on his fitness to drive. Another option is the
possibility to drive a standard route requiring a
certain amount of evasion or braking

manouevres. A special replay then shows the
driver how his reaction at these points may have
been under the influence of alcohol.
The software module supports various types of
weather (fair weather, fog, rain, snow, night) and
the tour can be evaluated via replay.
Motorsports –High-Level Edutainment
With the aid of a Foerst simulator drivers can
be taught how to handle a vehicle when going
to extremes – on a virtual course simulating a
state-of-the-art formula 1 race course.
This training gives the driver a good insight
into the physics of driving and helps develop
an experienced and steady driving style in all
situations.
The menu allows you to determine total weight,
road surface, motor capacity, type of drive, and
tyre quality.
In a playful manner and under different condi-
tions you can test the effects of racy gear shift-
ing, or the physical laws of the centrifugal forces
in turns.
A speedy drive on a Foerst race course therefore
guarantees high-level edutainment.

Fitness to Drive –Put the Rule to the Test
Whether a driver is fit to drive depends on many
internal and external factors. Using the Foerst
software you can put it to the test under various
conditions. The simulator menue enables the
trainer e.g. to put a trainee in particular situa-
tions requiring an immediate reaction. Full brak-
ing or evasive manoeuvres are e.g. always
required if a deer runs onto the virtual roadway
or a stopsign intercepts the drive. The impor-
tance of proactive and level-headed driving can
be clearly seen when driving in fog, which bears
a great risk for rear-end collision accidents.
Each driver who has ever undertaken a long trip
in monotonous surroundings knows of the dan-
gers of sleepiness behind the steering wheel.
You can specifically put a driver in this danger-
ous situation on the simulator letting him drive
on a motorway for a really long time. Afterwards,
in the diagram, deviations give conclusions on
concentration and reaction time of the examinee.
Also, driving along a country road is full of risks.
After having been behind the steering wheel a
long time, your reaction time may increase, at
worst, micro-sleep will be imminent. The simula-
tor program not only allows to measure a dri-
ver's reaction time but also offers the possibility
to demonstrate the effects of drink-driving or the
taking of pharmaceuticals on the fitness to drive.
Here the allrounder of the Foerst company offers

an option never to be accomplished, of course,
with a real car in real traffic.
After the drive there is the possibility to evaluate
the driver's performance via diagrammes and
logfiles. These data provide, among others, infor-
mation about speed, pedal positions, clearance
to the car in front, and time to collision and are
saved on the hard drive. The trainer can access
these informations at any time and design fol-
low-up drives according to the collected individ-
ual results.
The simulator can also be linked with biomedical
devices to register the physical reactions of a
trainee in different situations.

Driving School –Basic Knowledge Made Easy
The driving school program provides the trainer
with the possibility to instruct his trainees on the
basic principles of driving. De-clutching, shifting
and starting up, as well as the use of the other
controls becomes second nature to your
trainees while training on the simulator. This is
the best way to take away a possible fear of the
first real driving lesson a trainee may have.
In addition, eco-friendly and proactive driving
as well as starting on a hill can be trained.
Whether motorway or country road, in the city or
in the mountains: driving lessons taken in a
Foerst simulator guarantee for learning success
in a stress-free environment – even on wet
tarmac, in fog, in snow, or in the dark.
After a scene has been finished the trainer gets
an on-screen evaluation which is saved on the
hard drive. The program even comes with a
“curriculum”-mode automatically guiding the
trainee through the scenarios. What's more, the
last ten scenarios can be replayed and watched
from a bird's eye perspective.
Training contents:
The driving school program consists of topics chosen on amenu. They are divided in five levels:
Basic level (adjusting seat and mirrors, fastening the seat belt, control handling, steering exercises, start-up exercises, shifting)Developed level (eco-friendly and proactive driving, brakingexercises, starting on a hill)Achievement level (traffic regulations, situations involving otherroad users, keeping a distance, overtaking, changing lanes)
Special drives (country road, motorway, city, mountain road, perception of dangers)Weather and sight conditions (wet tarmac, fog, snow, dark-ness)
After a scene has been finished there is an on-screen evaluationwhich is being saved on the hard drive. The program comes witha “curriculum”-mode automatically guiding the trainee throughthe scenarios.

Driving simulators therefore allow a driver's
training that is energy-saving, eco-friendly,
weather-independent, efficient, and free of wear
close to the usual training by stages – with no
risk, be it for trainee or machine. Being able to
replicate traffic situations, to evaluate mistakes
via replay mode, to repeat all exercises, and to
analyse every mistake (both handling the con-
trols and driving) these allrounders are far ahead
of real driving school vehicles when it comes to
efficient training.
Free Driving –Simulated Reality
The “Free Driving” program familiarises the
trainee with the demands of an everyday drive.
Self-determined road users and the use of artifi-
cial intelligence require the same skills as are
needed in real-life traffic.
Especially if weather conditions, light conditions,
and traffic density are chosen individually you
will achieve a feeling almost akin to reality.
In case of a virtual drive in rain or snow – option-
ally with or without ABS – the driver is confront-
ed with the perils of aquaplaning, whereas a
drive in fog or darkness offers the experience of
the particularities of low visibility.

Types –Modifiable Ease of Operation
The car simulators of the Foerst company are accurat
replicates, robust, user-friendly, maintenance-free, and
modifiable. They come with one or two seats or as a
real vehicle. These high-tech devices are ergonomical-
ly designed to resemble a real car, and to meet the
necessities of a driving-school, and they are fully com-
puter-operated. To keep the joy of driving at an
authentic level, the driving stand is mounted with Ford
Focus originals (pedals, shifter, handbrake, and a
steering wheel (with levers) vibrating while driving).

All simulators of the Foerst company stand out due to
their ease of use. This high standard can even be
upgraded by introducing an external control desk offering
a whole series of special functions.
The additional functions of the external panel, which is
composed of an extra pc, interfaces, and two 19”
screens, enable the instructor to cause various incidents
to happen during a lesson. Interactively, he can, for
example, change the weather or let a person jump out
into the street to teach his trainees to expect the un-
expected.
Furthermore, the large size of the desktop enables the
instructor to access information about the simulation
while preparing a drive or evaluating lessons. Each
screen covers several functions: the left-hand screen
allows the instructor to follow the actions of the trainee,
to provoke events, to change perspectives, to log
sequences, and to watch replays, while the right-hand
screen covers administrative tasks. It shows data and
results of the trainee's progress, and can be used to
prepare new scenario sequences for future lessons.

Using the Programming Tool, you can write your own
scenarios to be run by the F12 driving simulator softwa-
re. This enables you to create a very wide variety of traf-
fic situations using all of the predefined graphical databa-
ses delivered with your simulator. All the exercises found
in e.g. the “Driving School Program” are scenarios. In
fact, you can take one of the existing scenarios and crea-
te your own by modifying it until it fits your needs.
Examples of what you can do in a scenario script are:
– Set weather conditions and position traffic signs.
– Assign a route to the driver (he/she will be instructed
where to drive).
– Insert other road users and control their behaviour.
– Trigger predefined events (e.g. deer running from
behind a tree).
– Execute various system commands (e.g. display cus-
tom messages).
– Monitor driver’s controls, position and speed and con-
ditionally perform other actions.
The functions used by scenarios to monitor and influence
the simulation are also available to remote network
clients. This makes it possible to let your own software
communicate with the simulator software.
The Programming Tool consists of a development envi-
ronment to be run on a desktop computer system for wri-
ting, testing and debugging scenario scripts.
It comes with a reference manual containing an introduc-
tion to the scenario programming language and an
exhaustive reference section describing the interface to
the simulator software.
