DESCRIPTION

Caravan Studios has been working away for the last 24 months (give or take) and we wanted to do an update for our staff. With a small about of editing (we didn't share some confidential funding details) I thought others might be interested as well.

APPENDIX D: FOUR EXIT STRATEGIES

1. If the app was simply a bad choice, did not work, or created some perverse outcomes we would remove it from circulation. It is possible we would still make the code available.

2. If the app worked well, had a big impact and needed a specific governance model and organization around it we might spin it off into its own organization. This could, conceivably, happen with SafeNight.

3. If the app worked well and there were organizations who could manage it effectively, we could turn it over to a 3rd party organization. This could happen with Range.

4. If the app worked well, had a revenue attached to it, and meet the needs of many nonprofit organizations we could operate it as a revenue generating business. 4Bells has the most potential for this.

APPENDIX E: THE NEXT SET OF POSSIBILITIES

Reality Check: A twitter account is sending out information in an environment that is contentious (say: Ukraine). How can we help users determine whether or not it is a propaganda account?

1 (Human Rights)

Hacked: A trusted twitter account is suddenly sending out surprising and controversial information. How can we help people determine whether or not the account has been hacked?

2 (Human Rights)

Safe Routes: Human rights defenders and others need to quickly navigate out of an area – avoiding checkpoints and often without access to connectivity. How can we provide them a safe route map that allows the use of identifiable landmarks to help navigate?

3 (Human Rights)

Summer Lunch Site: Public libraries and faith-based organizations both have the potential to offer up funded summer meals. How can we help them determine if they are a good candidate for a site or not?

4 (Youth Hunger)

Hail Mary: Individuals get on Twitter and send out a plea for help. How do we route those to someone who can answer?

5 (Social Services)

Wilson: Matching up a recipient to services is hard. It’s combines funding, capacity and current availability. Can we use an ask-and-answer model to better refer individuals to services?

6 (Social Services)

Ring Fence: People search for services at their end points – home, school, job. However, they may pass many service providers every day. How can we use technologies like geo-fencing to alert them to a nearby relevant service?

7 (Social Services)
