It has been a whirlwind of a spring for me, but so inspiring. After attending the Kiwanis MidYear Conference in Myrtle Beach in February, I attended the Circle K District Convention in Durham followed by the Key Club District Convention again in Durham in March. Then, in April, we attended the Aktion Club Midyear Conference in Charlotte. At each of these events, I was so inspired by all of the enthusiasm, sharing of ideas, elections of leadership, and fellowship. It is wonderful to be surrounded by service-oriented people who care about our communities. I always leave these events exhausted but at the same time re-energized. All the club meetings, service projects, fundraisers and regional meetings give me that same feeling of motivation: that I can and should do more. The more Kiwanians I'm surrounded by, the more that grows. We have another opportunity for that coming up; the Kiwanis International Convention (ICON) will be held June 23-26, 2016 in Toronto, Canada. I was recently asked two interesting questions on two different occasions: "Why should we go to an international convention?" and "What happens at an international convention?" Those are two valid questions. It's not inexpensive for our clubs and district to send members to these conventions so what will be the reward for doing so? Just as we have district conventions to meet other Kiwanians, share ideas and comradery, attend educational workshops, elect officers and amend bylaws at our house of delegates, so too this happens at each international convention. It happens on a much, much larger scale. At ICON, there are many more interesting, professional workshops to attend. There are thousands of Kiwanians to meet and share ideas for service projects and fundraiser ideas. One can view and purchase products from vendors in the exhibition hall, called the World Showcase, and many of our clubs do. There will also be a House of Delegates for voting. At that session we will elect officers, including hopefully one from our own district, Elizabeth Tezza, to represent us at that highest level as Vice President. We need Elizabeth as our representative on the International Board because just as our district board makes decisions you may or may not agree with but are bound to, so does the International Board. And their decisions affect us very much. Additionally, there are eleven amendments before the house, including an amendment regarding dues increases. Part of supporting our clubs and the children we serve is educating ourselves and participating in the decision making process for our organization. Imagine being surrounded by thousands of Kiwanians from all over the the world. Imagine what you can learn from each of them to improve your own programs for the kids in your communities. Imagine how inspired you'll be after that convention.

3 Great reasons to attend ICON Plus: Earlybird rate extended through May 15
From the pictures above, you might think is article is about location, location, and well, Jewel, but NO! Yes, Toronto is a great city; yes, our district-assigned hotel, the Fairmont Royal York, is a five-star hotel (and worth the experience, especially since the American $ is strong); and yes, artist-extraordinaire, Jewel, will sing for Kiwanis in a private concert Saturday night, but these are not the main reasons to attend. Attend for the:
1) SCOPE Until you attend a Kiw anis International Convention you have no idea how BIG the scope of Kiwanis truly is. And once you do attend, you’ll want to go back. Why? If for nothing else, the GREAT FELLOWSHIP.
2) EDUCATION / FORUMS / INFORMATION available Each year Kiw anis tops their performance with great forums to HELP YOUR CLUB and to HELP YOUR CLUB HELP YOUR COMMUNITY. As your district secretary, and having been in Kiwanis in various leadership positions, I am here to tell you—EVEN I learn something new each year I attend.
3) POWER OF YOUR VOTE This is our chance to elect one of OUR OW N into a role that leads to the highest leadership position in Kiwanis. Each club has two delegate slots, and anyone that has served as a Lt. Governor can represent ANOTHER club not going. We have the chance to bring over 360 votes to elect Elizabeth Tezza as our next Kiwanis International Vice President. WE HAVEN’T HAD A VICE PRESIDENT FROM THE CAROLINAS IN OVER 50 years. Are you up to the challenge?

Convention attendees to vote on changes to bylaws Attendees at the 2016 Kiwanis International convention will vote on proposed amendments to the Kiwanis International Bylaws. Review the proposed amendments.

Kiwanis International Foundation Children’s Fund
Dear Kiwanians:
We need your help! The Children’s Fund needs your help. Kiwanians and Club Boards, think about it! Think about what the Children’s Fund does for children in our own communities and worldwide. It supports programs and initiatives that help Kiwanians change the lives of children today in the way of grants to clubs, scholarships to our youth and the many needs of the children we serve. The fund is the backbone of our foundation.
We are more than half way through the 2015-2016 Kiwanis year and we are only at 23% of our $29,000 Children’s Fund goal. This goal is attainable, but getting there is dependent upon our clubs’ contribution through their annual club gifts to the foundation. As District Chair of the Kiwanis International Foundation (KIF), it is my responsibility to encourage clubs to make their annual club gift of $6 per member or more to the foundation. Also, we are asking for individual Kiwanians to give to the Children’s Fund. Most Kiwanians give to their favorite charities annually. We are suggesting that the Children’s Fund be made one of your favorite charities and that you contribute $25, $50, $100 or more to the fund. Your individual gifts will be included with the club gift and therefore, the club’s per capita will be increased considerably.
If you have already given to the fund (clubs and individuals) we thank you; if not, we hope you will. We understand that some clubs and members might be unable to contribute the amount that we request, but any gift will be appreciated.

Our very own Carolinas District CKI has entered Kiwanis International’s One Day video contest. They recorded a short video of their One Day project at the Boys and Girls Homes of Lake Waccama and uploaded it to the video contest tab on KI Facebook page. They need our help! Starting April 27, we can vote once per day. The video with the most votes by midnight EDT on Tuesday, May 3 will win a GoPro camera, so spread the word to your friends and family and let’s help them win!
April 1 represented the start of the new year for Circle K International (CKI). The newly elected board of officers, led by Governor Matt Walsh (Duke ’16) is planning a productive year of growth and furthering the mission of CKI in the Carolinas. Kicking the new year off, Governor Matt (pictured right) and newly appointed Carolinas CKI Administrator Jon Hethcox, a CKI alumni himself (pictured left), spent four days of intensive training at Governors and Administrators Training Conference (GATC) held at Kiwanis world headquarters in Indianapolis. While at GATC, Matt and Jon spent time learning about budgeting, conference planning, bringing out the best in CKI’s members and strategizing about the future of CKI. It wasn’t all work though, Governor Matt and Administrator Jon were also able to socialize with counterparts from other CKI districts in North America and came away understanding that despite geographical differences, CKI makes an impact in every community they call home.

Aktion of Carolinas Launches Lots of Hugs! The Aktion Clubs of the Carolinas have been chosen to pilot test the “Lots of Hugs” stuffed animal program by Kiwanis International and the inventor of this patented product – Randi Altschul. Randi is one of the top 70 inventors in the world. Take a look at the attached photos and the website: www.lotsofhugs.org Be sure to watch the video at: http://www.lotsofhugs.org/video/default.htm. Ten Aktion Clubs that were in attendance at the Aktion of the Carolinas MidYear Conference were each given ten Lots of Hugs Puppies to give away at their local children's hospitals. Looking forward to all the stories, photos and videos so we can truly say that Lot of Hugs successfully launched with Aktion in the Carolinas! ARC of North Carolina

Is your club, division and district using the correct Kiwanis logo and wordmark? Did you know Kiwanis has a brand and style guide where you can get the information?
You can review the brand and style guide online and make certain your club is meeting all the Kiwanis-style guidelines. It’s important for all of us in Kiwanis to be consistent—in our clubs and in the face we present to the public. That’s why we encourage clubs to use the official logo and wordmark on all materials.
If you’re not sure how to apply the brand to your club’s banners, advertisements or other print materials, visit our custom club logo website and complete the online form. You can also receive special anniversary logos that mirror the special logo we created for Kiwanis’ Centennial Celebration in 2015.
The form takes the guesswork out of logo creation. You’ll receive a package of logos in files appropriate for print and digital use.
Are your materials meeting brand guidelines?
The Formula to create a great induction ceremony Inducting new members is all about making them feel welcome and good about joining your club. Watch this new video from The Formula about four important elements of the best induction ceremonies for your club.

Wilmington Kiwanis makes donation to Brigade Boys and Girls Club The Kiwanis Club of Wilmington recently donated $16,000 to the Brigade Boys and Girls Club. The Kiwanis Club has been involved in supporting the Brigade Boys and Girls Club since 1921. In addition to monetary support, Kiwanians serve on the Brigade’s board of directors, volunteer for children’s programs, provide hands-on assistance where needed, and promote the Brigade’s fundraising efforts. Pictured above (from left) are David Carriker, CEO of the Brigade Boys and Girls Club and Wilmington Kiwanis Club president Larry Vacek. For more information about the Kiwanis Club, go to www.wilmingtonkiwanis.org.
For over 25 years, the High Point Kiwanis Club has planted a 6,000 square foot garden on the grounds of the Davis Furniture Plant in High Point. The garden yields about 2,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables each year that are donated to the Salvation Army Women's Shelter in town. About twenty regular members tend the garden every Monday and Thursday evening throughout the summer. The official planting this year will take place on Monday, May 2nd.
Bob Hill, left, was awarded the 55-year Legion of Honor certificate from Kiwanis International, and Frank Joyner, right, was presented a 30-year Legion of Honor certificate from Goldsboro Golden K President Bob White at the club's annual Spring Social held at Madison Avenue Baptist Church on February 18. Hill joined the Kiwanis Club of Goldsboro in 1961 before moving to the Golden K club five years ago.

Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club inaugural walkathon a huge success For the first time, the Winston Salem Kiwanis Club hosted a walkathon in support of BeTheMatch which is operated by the National Marrow Donor Program. NMDP manages the largest and most diverse marrow registry in the world. The initiative was led by Roby Walls, Winston-Salem Kiwanis Chairman for Sponsored Youth Clubs. This project is near and dear to Roby’s heart because his daughter, Julie Walls Kiefer, lost her life due to complications following her own transplant.
Held at the JDL Fast Track on Saturday, April 16, the Julie Walls Kiefer ‘Be the Match’ Walkathon raised over $4700 for bone marrow research and other patient related expenses. Participating in the walkathon was BeTheMatch, JDL Fast Track, Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club, Sponsored Youth Club Advisors, Faculty Advisors, the Arts Based Middle School Builder’s club, Atkins Key Club, Parkland Key Club, and RJ Reynolds Key club.
Other clubs providing monetary support were the Arts Based Elementary School K-Kids and the Northwest Middle School Builder’s Club. All the volunteers were excited about raising awareness about blood related cancer cures, collecting swabs, and raising money for BeTheMatch Foundation. Addie Sanders, National Marrow Donor Program Account Executive, was also there to encourage the students and to collect swab samples from those ranging in ages 18-44 years old.
It was heartwarming to see the students, their faculty advisors, and Kiwanians come together for this walkathon on such a beautiful Saturday morning. The walkers received donations from their sponsors simply for completing their walk. There were no prizes or medals for winning. They walked for the cause. Roby honored their commitment with the following statement: “It makes me happy to know that the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club and the Kiwanis family is willing to continue to honor my Julie’s wishes by raising money and sponsoring marrow drives that will help find a cure for blood cancer.”
According to Division 5 Lt. Governor Chris Billups, “Roby Walls’ sincere hugs, love and passion will result in even greater things to come! What a great start to a fantastic and worthwhile project in saving lives!”
This year the walkathon was successful with raising money, but for the Winston-Salem Kiwanis Club members, faculty advisors and student volunteers, there is an equally important goal and that is raising awareness. According to the BeTheMatch website, “The cure for blood cancers like leukemia is in the hands of ordinary people.” The event’s organizers are hoping that they will continue to raise money until their goal of $5,000 is reached or surpassed. Anyone interested in helping with this worthwhile cause can log into the website to make a tax deductible donation or to find more information about BeTheMatch at www.bethematchfoundation.org/goto/juliewkiefer .
