Multiple Sclerosis Case Study

Katelyn Weimerskirch

Consider the Following Patient…

• 28 year old, Monica, presents with fatigue, muscle pain, weakness, and numbness, and dizziness. After talking with a doctor who asked her more questions regarding her health, she admitted to an unstable mood, occasional bowel and bladder dysfunction, and balance and coordination issues.

Diagnosis

•What would you initially diagnose Monica with?

Multiple Sclerosis

Biochemistry

• Autoreactive CD4+ T helper cells activate which increases immune response. • The activated CD4+ T cells and proinflammatory cells cross the

blood brain barrier.• The cells produce proinflammatory cytokines and interferon-

gamma.• They then active microglia and astrocytes which induces myelin

phagocytois.• Myelin phagocytosis increase the reactivation of CD4+ cells,

causing a feedback loop.

Treatment options for Symptoms

• There is no cure for MS• Physical therapy/Speech therapy/Occupational therapy• Immunosuppressive drugs to reduce the immune response• Steroids to reduce inflammation
