claimIn the evening of 8 October 2021, the 68-ft fishing vessel Bear ran aground on a beach off Barnegat Light in Island Beach State Park, New Jersey, USA prompting an emergency response by the Coast Guard and local fire services.
The 1984 built scalloper was returning home to Viking Village near Barnegat Light early on Saturday evening loaded with a catch of 11 bags of scallops, when she grounded at 2000 hours on a sandbar at the Island Beach State Park, and became stuck in the surf. The crew of three were reported to be safe and had been able to escape from the grounded vessel onto the beach. The Coast Guard and the Seaside Park and Seaside Heights fire companies were notified of the grounding and at 2200 hours personnel and craft were dispatched to the area to provide assistance. A local team from TowBoatUS was also deployed the following
morning. The local fire brigade used a jet ski was used to get a line from the vessel to the attending tugs.
Initial attempts to pull the Bear from the beach were unsuccessful and a more powerful tug, Shamrock, was subsequently dispatched from Atlantic City to assist. However efforts to get her line to the Bear were abandoned due to prevailing weather conditions which were causing surf to continually pound the vessel. Local officials closed an area of the park to vehicles and anglers whilst the Bear remained aground due to the weather. In the meantime steps were taken by NorthStar Marine to remove 1,400 gallon of fuel from the fishing vessel. The crew were also reportedly able to remove the catch.
A further attempt to pull the vessel free was expected after weather conditions improve. Click here for video.
