Safety curtainsMaking machines and installations safe for work, whilst complying with the regulations is quite often a major challenge for design engineers. Modern design and thought-through ergonomics often leave little room for safety components.Use of our compact safety curtains allows you the option to combine machine safety and other design specifi ca-tions according to need.The rapid reaction time of just a few milliseconds allows mounting of the safety curtains close to the danger areas with the smallest possible safety clearance.
ControllerOur compact safety controllers provide complete safety monitoring of your machine. The controllers are impres-sive due to the confi guration options that are available, and their rapid reaction times. Light curtainsUse of our light curtain systems allow industrial automa-tion processes to be controlled and monitored. For ex-ample, it is possible to detect accesses, ejections and edges, while objects can be counted or measured and protrusions checked.

Solution: One light curtain is used for the y axis and two for the x axis. Thereby, the length, height and width of the object can be ascertained and, using the CAN-Bus and the corresponding software, the dimensions evaluated. The nozzles can now be adjusted so that they are optimally distanced from the object and only those nozzles which are really required are active. With it, ITW could improve quality and reduce costs.
Customers problem: ITW were looking for a precise and effi cient application of powder for their powder-coating machine. It had to be ensured that the powder gun sprayed at the right time and in the right direction.

Solution: The solution is simply the Safe400 light cur-tain with the SafeC 400 controller. LTG decided to use Safe400 because, thanks to its extremely small dimen-sions, there is room for it even in the tightest of spaces on paternoster systems. For the monitoring of the safety relevant components, such as the light curtain and emergency stop button, LTG integrated the SafeC 400 safety controller.
Solution: Safe4 with ILAS made alignment with mir-rors an easy problem to fi x. The cost of these solutions was far less than the competition.
Customers problem: In order to be able to bring older equipment in line with the safety standards de-scribed in BGR 234, LTG use safety components from CEDES. Older machines with dated and insuffi cient safety devices are backfi tted with Safe400 safety light curtains.

Solution: Teca-Print implemented the Safe400 light curtain with a module length of 100 mm. The detection area exactly corresponds to the mechanical size, and therefore allows the emitter and receiver light curtains to be integrated in the opening without problem. For the safety controller, Tecaprint decided to use the SafeCIS3 with an extension module; SafeCIS3-EXT-2C. The small size of this controller made installation in the small con-trol cabinet no problem. By using the safety contacts of the SafeCIS3-EXT-2C, the supply voltage for the rotating indexing machine was interrupted. The controller was confi gured with automatic start.
Solution: Safe 400 is used for the safety of the pa-tient, so that the robot is stopped if, due to an error, it moves too close to the patient.
Customers problem: The equipment consists of a pad printing machine and a rotating indexing machine, which guides the parts to be printed on a holder into the print area. The holders on the rotating index machine are loaded by hand. After printing, the parts are re-moved from the holder by a mechanical device. The operator is able to manually rectify jamming of the auto-matic removal device. The operator has access to the removal device via a small opening in the separating wall between the imprinting and removal area. To ensure that the operator is not at risk in such a situation, the small opening must be safeguarded. When a solution was sought, the height of the small opening was the decisive factor.
Customers problem: With IMRT “intensity-modula-ted radiotherapy”, a variable dosage of radiation can be applied to a tumor while still being able to protect healthy tissue. The IMRT is especially ideal for the irradi-ation of diffi cult to get to tumours at the base of the skull, spinal column and prostate. This project is referred to in the press as the “radiation cannon”. Siemens were loo-king for a solution to protect the patient from the robot.

Solution: To help ABB become more effective, CEDES provided a “T” connector. Everything is connected with standard M12 connectors. To save time in the alignment process, CEDES suggested to ABB to use Safe4 with the integrated laser alignement system, which they subse-quently admitted was the best tool available on the market.
Customers problem: For each project for Renault car industry, ABB needs to safeguard the robots using a safety light curtain. The customer’s problem was that the amount of time needed to connect and align one light curtain was far too long. They wanted to be able to reduce the amount of time required in the wiring and alignment process.

Safeguarding machines and equipment so that they meet required safety standards is not always easy. Often, modern design and sophisticated ergonomics leave little room for safety components.
The extremely compact Safe400 safety light curtain from CEDES gives designers the ability to perfectly combine the latest safety requirements with whatever design and construction criteria they may have. With a cross-section
of just 15 x 20 mm, it is one of the smallest light curtains available. It also provides safety category 4 finger pro-tection.

Safe400 light curtains monitor the danger zones of machines and equipment, protecting people and material from injuries and damage. With their extremely compact construction, Safe400’s emitter and receiver edges can be easily installed in machinery, particularly where space is extremely limited. Safe400 is also perfect for upgrading the safeguarding of exis-ting machinery.
When combined with CEDES’ safety controllers, Safe400 can be used for a wide range of applications. In addition to effective safeguarding, it can also measure the height of objects. The rapid detection time guarantees fast and reliable operation of machines and systems.
With a module length of 50 mm, the Safe400 protective field form and height can be adapted for every application up to a maximum length of 1,800 mm. Also complex safeguarding re-quirements, such as perimeter protection or cascading multiple protective fields, can be optimally solved with the Safe400.

The Safe4 safety light curtain enables contact-free and very cost-effective safeguarding of areas on and around hazardous machines. Safe4 light curtain is a contactless safety device with built-in self- testing. It contains two redundant self-monitored chan nels which fulfill index IV of the Machine Directive EC/98/37 (Safety category 4 PL e according to EN ISO 13849-1 or SILCL 3 according to EN 62061).
The light curtain system is very resistant to ambient light interference and can cope easily and very reliably with demanding applications, such as welding robots. The large detection range (up to 30 m for hand-resolution and up to 9 m for finger-resolution) also enables the reliable safeguarding of hazardous zones covering large areas. With Safe4 units available starting at 120 mm lengths, they are optimally designed to safeguard small hazardous areas. In addition, it is also possible to combine multiple protective fields (cascading or L-configuration), and monitor them with a single con-troller. This provides the machine manufacturer the freedom to optimize the machine design.

The SafeCIS3 safety controller has been designed as a compact control unit for the smallest safety light curtains in the world – the Safe400 series.
The controller’s advantages include a slim profile and an extremely fast reaction time combined with multi-functional abilities such as muting and external device monitoring (EDM). In addition to monitoring the protective area, the controller can simultaneously control emergency-stop or interlock switches.
More complex applications can be managed with the help of the CEDES Configuration Tool, which enables an individual configuration per software.
Additionally, a number of relay and Bus extension modules enable direct integration into different types of safety control systems.

The multifunctional SafeCIS3 safety controller offers a sensatio-nally good-value solution for safeguarding hazardous machines at the highest safety level.
Despite its extremely compact dimensions of just 111 x 125 x 22.5 mm, this controller can perform the most wide ranging applications. Safety light curtain monitoring, muting for safe-guarding automatic material transport systems, as well as integrated safety override function for set-up processes, are possible with the SafeCIS3.
SafeCIS3 comes standard with two powerful PNP outputs. Relay outputs or Bus-interfaces are available as extension modules. If required, external contacts can be monitored by the EDM (External Device Monitoring) inputs.

The compact SafeC 200 and SafeC 400 safety controller-monitor all necessary safety functions for your machine. You no longer have to purchase individual safety relays for every safety component and laboriously wire them all up.
Light curtains, emergency stop buttons and door switches on large or small machines are all controlled with just one compact SafeC controller, saving time, money and space. The required flexibility comes from the optical interface, OptiLink, and the CEDES “Configuration Tool” software. Inputs and outputs can be configured, and the desired combination of components defined in the simplest
possible way, with just a few mouse clicks. Whether you need automatic, manual or two-hand start, time delays,blanking or temporary overriding of an individual safety component; CEDES‘ SafeC 400 combined with the Safe400 safety light curtain fulfills all your needs.

Up to ten safety components, such as emergency stop buttons, light-curtains or two-hand controls, can be connected to a SafeC 200 or SafeC 400, and monitored. The controllers function via two com-pletely independent safety circuits. The integrated force-guided and redundant relays allow reliable switching of loads up to 1,100 VA. Stop-delay times are individually adjustable. The control-ler is also available with monitored semi-conductor outputs, which directly control and monitor power contactors. Thanks to the ease with which they can be configured, both the SafeC 200 and the SafeC 400 controllers are usable in the most versatile applications.
The two controllers are a real alternative to a complex Safety PLC. Machine manufacturers and facility managers have an unhindered choice when it comes to selecting safety components. They can integrate the components which best suit the particular application. Compared with the ordinary Safety PLC or the Safety-Bus solution, using the SafeC controller can lead to savings of up to 75%. The controllers live up to the trend of system simplicity.

The use of the very latest technology, the dense monitoring area and the extremely robust construction ensures excellent reliability and longevity.
The thin profile (12 x 16 mm) and the integrated controller means Process/Mini requires minimal space and can be easily integrated into machines and systems.
Process/Mini is based on ASIC technology which is already employed in millions of optical sensors used to safeguard elevator doors.

With multiple infrared beams, a dense detection zone is crea-ted between the emitter and receiver profiles. Any interruption of one or more of these beams by a person or object triggers an output signal.
Process/Mini is the ideal sensor for the economical detection or monitoring of objects, 30 mm or bigger. Due to the com-pact profile, Process/Mini is ideal for applications where instal-lationspace is limited. The easily visible integrated LED display

The light curtain with the compact profile gives design engineers a great deal of freedom, not only when it comes to new concepts, but also for refitting and modernizing older machines and equipment. Despite its incredibly compact size, it offers an operating range of up to 4 m.
The ObjectC 100 controller is available in three versions:Digital I/O, RS485 and CAN Bus.
The digital I/O controller submits information about overheight, overhang and 4 different zones. Thanks to the comfortable teach-in function ObjectC 100 is suitable to many different tasks e.g. detection or sorting of objects.
The versions with the RS485 respectively the CAN bus interface submit additional information about the status of each beam. In addition there is a measure function integrated which enables to measure fast moving objects.

The SafeCIS3 safety controller has been designed as acompact control unit for the smallest safety light curtainsin the world - the Safe400 series.
The controller’s advantages include a slim profile and anextremely fast reaction time combined with multi-functional abilities such as muting and external devicemonitoring (EDM). In addition to monitoring the protective area, the controller can simultaneously control emergency-stop or interlock switches.
More complex applications can be managed with thehelp of the CEDES Configuration Tool, which enables anindividual configuration per software.
Additionally, a number of relay and Bus extension modules enable direct integration into different types ofsafety control systems.

Effi cient coating
The ObjectC100 / Object100 light curtain measurement system contributes signifi cantly to the effi ciency and qua-lity of the coating process in automatic coating systems.
Object100 detects the size and position of the object to be coated. In this way the spray guns can be optimally positioned to coat each and every object. This brings about a clear improvement in the quality of the applied colour.
Not needed spay guns are deactivated, thus reducing coating material usage. Due to the fi ne light beam pitch the Object100 detects even small objects. The light curtain system’s high sampling rate permits rapid pass rates for items to be coated.

Compact safety light curtains reliably make the feed area of modern papers cutting machines safe. The ergonomics and design of the machine are not, in any way, nega-tively influenced by this contact-less safety system.
Safety light curtains Safe4 and Safe400 fulfil Safety Cat-egory 4 and SIL3. The ergonomics and therefore the effi-ciency of the plant are improved significantly. The optical sensors are also clearly superior to any mechanical safety equipment concerning manufacturing and warehousing costs.
Use of the safety controller SafeCIS3 means that not only the light curtain but also the other safety components (such as the Emergency Stop button) on the plant are monitored. There no need to use additional safety relays.
