PARISH TRIP TO ITALY
Pilgrimages lead us closer to God by leading us along paths of new discovery. Our parish pilgrimage to Italy in 2019 is specifically designed to give us time and space within the cities of Siena and Assisi to really enter into the lives of St. Catherine, St. Francis, and St. Clare. We will visit the places they lived and prayed, and we’ll hear about their influence on the lives of those they served as well as how they continue to inspire people today. We will experience the cities that have grown up around their homes, the churches and basilicas dedicated to each of them, and St. Francis’ hermitage. In Rome we will have Mass at the Basilica of St. Peter and the rare privilege of a guided tour of the underground excavations beneath St. Peter’s Basilica. We will spend time in the Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel. If Pope Francis is in town, we will attend the General Papal Audience. We will visit the basilica that houses the tomb of St. Catherine of Siena in Rome as well. In each of these places, we will be led to a new understanding of our patroness, our Catholic faith, and our own relationship with God and God’s people.
Pilgrimages also lead us closer to God in ways that don’t depend on churches and saints—because every location, meal, and conversation can be “sacred ground.” Our trip to Italy will also include an afternoon of wine tasting; a day in Florence; travel through the Italian countryside; visits to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Coliseum; plenty of opportunities to enjoy Italian food, cafes, gelato, and shopping; and time for conversation and quiet.
We already have 44 people on the list of interested travelers, so we are confident that we will be going to Italy from May 13–23, 2019. If you would like to get on this list, please contact Ann Marie at ann.marie.eckert@dor.org. The official brochure that will give the itinerary, costs, and practical information about the trip will be available at the end of this month. Here are a few details we do know:
• We will travel by bus from Ithaca to New York’s JFK airport for a nonstop flight to Rome and return home the same way.
• We will have a tour guide with us throughout our journey as we travel by motor coach. • We will be staying in three- and four-star hotels, including a hotel located within Rome to allow for more
flexibility in our evening plans. • The cost will be close to $4,200 per person, assuming double occupancy. Trip insurance is available at an
additional cost.
We will be hosting an informational meeting and collecting registrations for the trip on Sunday, September 23, from 1–2:30 p.m. The trip will remain open until all 40 spaces are filled. We hope you will consider taking part in this pilgrimage! We are excited to see what new discoveries and insights it will provide to all.
