This tutorial is to illustrate the processes of making object reflection and shadow

effects by using CATIA V5 R16. At first, the creation of a simple box was shown by

the step-by-step screenshots. Follow by the Photo Studio Workbench setting to

prepare the shooting for the reflection and shadow effects. At last, custom selection

of the material properties will determine the final outcome of the shooting.

Create an offset plane by refer to the Box’s front face, plane direction is facing inward.

On that offset plane, click ‘Project 3D Elements’ icon and select the Box’s front face.

Select one of the lines of the outer rectangular, go to Edit – Auto Search, the whole rectangular 3D element will be selected. Then delete it, only left the inner rectangular.

Pad the sketch, the pad direction must be facing inward. In the Length box, Right-click, choose Edit Formula.

Click the Offset Plane once, then select the Offset Value (=2mm). This is just an example of using formula. You may alternatively key-in 2mm if already understood how formula works.

Assign an material to the LCD Body, for instance choose Gravel 1.

Go to material’s properties, Rendering Tab – Texture Tab. Click the Box besides Image Name, and choose the User Interface image (jpg, png, gif, etc..) you want to use on the screen.

Click the Gravel 1 material tree once, you will see the Compass attached to it.

Double-click the compass, play with the Rotation Increment value until you get like shown.

Drag the image size to fit it to the LCD size, play with compass to adjust it’s vertical position.

Double-click the Gravel 1 tree again, uncheck the UV links, then play with the Scale U value.

Go back to PartBody (Right-click + F), notice that the Compass is not in it’s default position .

Move the cursor to the Compass Centre (will change to cross-like arrows), drag and drop it to the small coordinate system at bottom right. This resets the Compass orientation.

Start a new Photo Studio Workbench, name it and save it. Under Window, tile vertically the 2 documents, then drag and drop Laptop Part to the Photo Studio Laptop Product.

Create a Directional Light, adjust the light position and direction as shown. Use Quick View orientation to help you adjust the light.

Right-click Camera in the tree, choose Properties, go to Position Tab, Check the Update Box. This allows the camera view to always update with the current view.

Create a Shooting, select the Camera and Light. Choose the image size you wish.

Render the Shooting, click Render Single Frame. This will take some time to render the image.

Go back to Laptop Part Document, Right-click Mirror tree, play with the Light Tab properties to get a different image . You may need to try several times on here.

To adjust the shadow properties, Double-click Light 1 tree, go to Lighting Tab. Adjust the Color and Intensity to get a desired shadow. You may need to try several times on here.
