REVIEW: Taxes?!?A. England tried to get the

colonies to help pay for the French and Indian War.

B. Colonists thought it was the job of the colonial assemblies to pass taxes.1. Not the job of the king or

Parliament.

REVIEW: Stamp ActA. Stamp Act was passed

and it taxed paper and items using paper.1. Paid directly by colonist

(like sales tax today).2. All other taxes had been

indirect b/c merchants had just raised prices a little.

B. “No taxation without representation” was the protest.

REVIEW: Stamp ActC. Since colonies had no

votes in Parliament, paying taxes they weren’t asked about wasn’t fair.

D. Colonies held the Stamp Act Congress to complain and started a boycott of British goods.

E. Started Sons and Daughters of Liberty to protest taxes too.

F. Stamp Act gets repealed.

new indirect taxes on:1. Paint.2. Paper.3. Tea.

B. They were designed to raise money not control trade.

C. This made the colonists very angry.

The Tea Act was not a tax!

IV. Tea ActIt gave the British East India Company exclusive rights to sell tea to the colonies.

1. Remember, colonists were boycotting tea b/c of the Townshend Acts.

2. Sons of Liberty thought cheap tea would end the boycott

IV. Tea ActC. In Boston, colonists

dressed as Indians boarded two ships and dumped the tea in the harbor.1. Known as the Boston

Tea Party.2. In Charles Town and

Georgetown they also stopped the tea from being sold.

IV. Tea ActD. Parliament punished

the colonies with the Intolerable Acts.

E. The Colonies responded by sending delegates to a Continental Congress to arrive at a solution.

met to elect representatives to go to Philadelphia for Congress.1. They also created the

Committee of 99 to run SC.B. Henry Middleton was

elected president of Congress helped write a non-importation and non-exportation agreement. 1. Except for rice b/c it was

deemed too important.

First Continental CongressC. On April 19, 1775 the first battle of the American

Revolution occurred at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts.

D. The Second Continental Congress met that summer.
