Celebrity and Pop Art

What is Pop Art?

• Pop art is one of the major art movements of the twentieth century.

• It began in Britain and America in the mid to late 1950s.

• Key features include the use of bold colours, found images, reference to popular culture such as comics, advertising and films.

Andy Warhol made many images of celebrities, especially Marilyn Monroe, using flat colour.

Flat colour is an area of colour with the same tonal value throughout.

Warhol’s favourite method was silk screen printing.

He often used repetition of the same image in his work.

•Use coloured paper, tissue paper, fineliner •rework a found image of a celebrity.

In each image use different colours and different media to rework your found image. Use bold flat colour and strong tonal contrasts.  Level 6 Draw a celebrity of your choice working from the same found image. Repeat this task 4 times across 4 pages. Title:How does the title of the work contribute to your understanding of the work?

Hope (2008) consists of a stylized stencil portrait of Obama.

The design was created in one day and printed first as a poster. Fairey sold 350 of the posters on the street immediately after printing them. It was then more widely distributed

The poster was inspired by Social Realism and, while widely praised as original and unique, can be seen as part of a long tradition of contemporary artists drawing inspiration from political candidates and producing "posters that break the mold not only in terms of color and style but also in message and tone.“ Fairey himself has said, "My historical inspiration was the well-known JFK portrait where he is posed in a three-quarters view looking slightly upward and out into the distance. The image of Lincoln on the five- dollar bill has a similar feel."

Look at examples by Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Eelus. You need to create a high contrast image first and then print this to card.Then cut out different layers carefully using a sharp cutting knife (be very careful!). Stencil print with acrylic and dry sponge or spray paint.  Level 5 Create a one layer stencil of your celebrity and print this into your sketchbook. ORCopy in detail one image by Shepard Fairey, Banksy or Eelus.  Level 6 Create a two layer stencil of your celebrity and print this in your sketchbook. This could be in black and white or two contrasting colours.  Level 7 to 8  Create a multilayer stencil (3 or 4 colours of differing values) of your celebrity and print this in your sketchbook. Scale up and print onto A3 board or canvas. Photograph your outcomes.

Cover Task

Jamie Reid is a British born artist, most famous for his use of ‘ransom note’ style lettering.

Task

•Use an image of a celebrity.

•Tear areas away around the eyes and/or mouth for text.

•Stick down on a black background.

•Create a short message that relates to the person by using ‘ransom note lettering.’ The words could be lyrics, or famous quotations etc.
