Grant Application Guidelines

• Applications will be open from August 14 –November 27, 2019

• Only cities in the state of Kansas may apply for grant funding

• Grants will be awarded in January 2020• Guidelines have been attached as part of this

webinar

Application Process & QuestionsApplication Process: Cities must submit a proposal online (LKM Grant Application).

• Each city may submit one proposal• Applicants must be affiliated with a city• Proposals due: November 27, 2019• Estimated notification of grant awards: December 2019• Grant period: January 2020 – July 2020

Application Questions:• City demographic data• Complete Count Committee contact information• Inventory of city’s communication and social media tools• Amount requested• Description of social media platforms through which your city intends to purchase

advertising with grant funds• Description of how your city plans to target HTC populations through social media

advertising

Social Media Grant Application - PreferenceGrants will be awarded to cities with thoughtful, innovative strategies for reaching residents through social media platforms. Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate the following:

• Active participation in a city or county Complete Count Committee (CCC)• Identification of the city’s Hard-to-Count (HTC) population• Identification of a Census Point of Contact• Description of how city expects to spend social media advertising grant award• Population of city or social media audience• Following the League’s Census 2020 social media efforts through KansasCounts

(@KansasCounts) on at least one social media platform (Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram) and engaging (like/share/tag)

Social Media Grant Application - Consideration

Consideration will be given to proposalsthat provide the following:• Description of strategies to address HTC

population using advertising throughcity’s social media platform(s)

• Inventory of city’s communications andsocial media platforms includingaudience size

• Plan to track and measure engagementof social media advertising

Social Media Grant Size

Grant amounts will vary, depending on proposed activities and the city’s capacity. Based on the number of applications, grants will be awarded up to $2,000.

Additional Funding Grant Application - Preference

Grants will be awarded to cities with thoughtful,innovative strategies for reaching residentsthrough printed Census 2020 materials.

Preference will be given to proposals thatdemonstrate the following:• Active participation in a city or county

What the League is Doing to Support Census Efforts

• Assistance with local organizing efforts• Presentations at state-wide, regional, and local meetings• Funding for social media advertising grants to cities• Educational/Informational webinars on key census topics• Coordination with state partnership specialists and the statewide Complete Count

Committee• Creating personalized profiles for cities to help tell the story of how population data affects

their local community• Coordination with the State Data Center to ensure data records are as accurate as possible

League Statewide AdvertisingIn addition to providing funds to cities, the League plans to purchase radio, print, and digital media statewide to promote the 2020 Census.

The League will provide Kansas-specific Census articles to the Kansas Press Association for publication in newspapers statewide.
