The Centre is primarily concentrating on development of infrastructure for the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). At present, the operational objective is to set-up studio/ laboratories for the video and web cou rses. The Centre has the-state-of-artvideo equ ipment and multi media software. The CET is now involved in one of the national level major project along with other IITs and IISc under MHRD, Government of India namely, National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learn ing (NP-TEL). In this project the Centre is developing 15 web and 6 video courses. The video courses will be transmitted through Doordarsan GYANDARSHAN-III also called the Eklavya channel.
MAJOR EQUIPMENT AND FACILITIES
The web studio of the Centre is functional now. The construction of the video studio of the Centre is under progress. However, for the video recording of various lectu res are going in a temporarily video laboratory along side the web lab itself, which was constructed to suit the requirement of ideal video recording to take care of the acoustics, lighting, dustproof environment, etc. Now, the Centre is also geared up with servers for the web and vid eo courses. Some web cou rses are already uploaded in the servers. One Windows based server and one Linux server are continuously providing services for course developers, project personnel, student and reviewers of the courses. Stream of the video lectures through LAN is under trial phase.
Moreover, the Centre is now eq uipped with Apple Power
Mac computers. These computers will be solely dedicated for video developments and video editing are going on in these machines.
To provide non-interruption in the power supply, the Centre has purchased 2x30KVA UPS and 40KVA Input Isolation Transformers. These are also fu lly functional now. One 10 KVA isolation transformer was also purchased for the Office of the Head. That will be installed shortly.
We are also procuring one video conferencin g system for the Centre, which will arrive at the Centre very soon. Another important purchase for the Centre in this academic year is touch screen and plasma TV. These items will help us in the preparation of video courses after they are installed .

CENTRE FOR MASS MEDIA COMMUNICATION
INTRODUCTION
M ass media usually are thought of as sources of news and entertainment. They also carry messages of persuasion. Important, though often overlooked, is how mass messages bind people in to communities, even into nations. Uni ted Nations study based on the data on the number of television and rad io sets around the globe and these data segregated into western democracies and developing countries shows a di rect corelations between med ia use, education and prosperity.
Centre for M ass M edia Communication (CMMC) of the Insti tute was started in M ay 2004 with an objective to achieve some of the above mentioned outcomes. Presently the Centre has state-of-the-art pre-press, offset press and post press facil ities. In addition to training stud ents of the Department of Design regard ing various aspects of print media design, it ca ters to vari ous in-house prin ti ng requirements of liT Guwahati. In fu ture it will be expanded to incl ude other elements of mass media like electronic and photographic media.
