Study of Energy Agency Freiburg §  Sectors covered: private household, small scale

industries, trade and services, industry, energy conversion (related to 2010), transport sector excluded

§  Freiburg and surrounding districts „Emmendingen“ (680 km2) and „Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald“ (1380 km2)

§  Renewables: wind energy, hydro power, photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, geothermal energy, biomass (biogas), wood, saving of energy

Results

§  Energy supply by 100% in the region possible – at least 50% energy savings required

§  Biggest potential at electricity sector: wind and photovoltaics §  Biggest potential at heating sector: biomass, solar thermal energy

§  100% goal for „electricity“ easier than for „heating“

§  Strategy for matching renewable energy production and consumption (smart grid, storage)

§  Big free potentials (80-90%) besides hydropower, biomass and wood

§  For development of potentials investments of approx. 15 billions € are necessary: 3 billion € for renewables, 12 billion € for refurbishment of residential buildings (annual energy costs for the region are approx. 0.9 billion €/a)

Challenges

§  Transport sector and transport concepts

§  Heating and cooling

§  Storage of energy

§  Match of production and consumption

§  Commercialization

§  Economic incentives, investments

§  Regulational framework

§  Sustainablity – balance between ecologic, economic and social aspects
