Physical/Psychological Reactions

• Which colors are stimulants, calming, soothing, exciting

• Which colors recede and advance

• Pg. 11 - 12

• Warm colors: colors w/ yellow or red undertones. Aggressive, advancing, intense

Warm Colors vs Cool Colors

• Cool colors: colors w/ blue undertones. Relaxed, recessive, calm.

Warm Colors vs Cool Colors

• 1. Divide colors of product into groups according to intensity (saturation).

• 2. Combine into color schemes (same intensity)

• 3.Do not combine from various groups, except neutrals.

Color Coordination

• Brights: clear, vivid

• Pastels: added white to soften/lighten

• Midtones: in-between values

• Jeweltones: royal

• Muted/dusty: midtones w/ gray

• Earthtones: based on earth sand, rust

• Neutrals: white /black/ grays/beige/browns, blend w/ any color group

The Color Groups

• Refrain using color trend in store walls/flooring/ceiling.

*Can look dated

*Use neutral palette. Accent w/ pop colors in key areas.

• Promote a color scheme each season. Must include trend colors, pop or accent colors, and basics/staples/neutrals. *Create a color story.

Color in Décor & Merchandising

• Common uses

• ROYGBV

• Color scheme/group (ie: analogous)

• Dark to light

Merchandising Product

Color

• Careful when using

same color on form

as on product and

• The Color Box, Design Options, Color Portfolio,

• Cotton Inc, various others.

TEXTURE

Texture

• Texture: surface treatment or feel. Can be seen or touched.

• Due to open sell fixturing, very important

Surfaces

• Smooth, shiny = reflect more light

• Chrome, satin, enamel, lacquer, etc.

• Rough, deep pile = hold light

• Velvet, sandpaper, untreated wood, carpet

• Modern vs rustic, feminine vs masculine, etc.

• Texture must be in harmony w/ the rest of the store

• Careful w/ smooth/light colored surfaces (glass, chrome, etc.) Showcase fingerprints/smudges/dirt.
