Changing Teacher Perception

About A Child

Laura A. Riffel, Ph.D.

Reality

We have decreased face time

by 62% since the 1950’s.

Reality

A Teacher’s Real Job

True Classroom Make-Up

• Kids who have trouble with noise, light, smell= 16%

• Kids who can’t sit still= 10%

• Allergies= 2.2%

• Kids who process language slow= 20.5%

• Kids who need more booster shots= 20%

• Kids who don’t hear well= 1.3%

• Kids who struggle with new learning= 11.6%

• Kids who struggle with social situations= 8.6%

What’s Different?

• The problem isn’t what’s

different with kids…..

• The problem is the set-up

of a classroom hasn’t

changed for over 100

years.

TUMS

• Touch

• Use their name in a positive way

• Make eye contact

• Smile T

Turn off fluorescent lights

• Turn on desk lamp (60 watt bulb)

45-90 seconds prior to

aggressive acts • Heart Rates reach 147 beats per minute

Music Research

• Your heart rate will match the music that

you are listening to

• 60 bpm is your resting heart rate

Put a thought provoking

question on the board • Train students to come in and read the

question and be ready to answer it when

the lights come on -

Stand at the door and greet each student

with TUMS after every high energy transition

• Touch

• Use their name in a positive way

• Make eye contact

One month later-

• Our data went from

42 aggressive acts

per day – to 2 total

that needed

intensive

interventions.

Positive Psychology

The Hope of Being Successful

Social Connection

Four major

categories for

intrinsic rewards

How we can use this information as we plan for teaching students?

Fear of failure is reduced

Pacing is at your own rate

No down time during the game

Always moving up a level- feeling of achievement

Games are always new each time

• We have to make it

more fun to do the right

thing than it is to do the

incorrect behavior.

• How can we make

behavior in the

classroom so much

fun kids work hard to

have good behavior?

Put Mr. Potato Head Together

Put the cootie together.

Don’t think this is just an elementary idea.

Even high school students will have good

behavior if the reward is right – They will just

want to make the cootie bug more bizarre

looking

Barrel of Monkeys

Chutes and Ladders

Same concept as Candy

Land- All of the students

working together for a group

pay off.

classroom

Brownie Points

Make your own scratch-off prizes

Two parts model paint to one

part dishwashing detergent.

Here’s my suggestion- On tag

board make your bubble

letters and then write a prize

in each bubble letter.

Laminate the tag board.

Then paint over the laminated

letters. This way you can

reuse it year after year.

Otherwise, the student will

scratch too hard and you

won’t be able to use it again.

Label Noodles “A” and “B” – put prizes on board for “A” and

“B” and then choose two students to start marbles on

command. Class gets prize of whichever marble makes it

first.

Mystery Motivator

Students flip over letters as they get caught exhibiting

excellent behavior- trying to figure out what they are

earning. Kind of like “Wheel of Fortune”

Marbles in a Jar

Write prizes on a CD- choose student to spin.

Spin the wheel

Smarty Pants

Every “A” paper earns a slip of paper with the student’s name into the smarty pants. When the class earns a reward, the teacher draws a name. That students gets to pick the prize for the class.

How full is your bucket?

Are you a Bill or a Walter?????

• Behavior Specific Praise

– Don’t just hand out a “gotcha”- it means

nothing

– Tell the student out loud exactly why they

are getting it

– You are teaching everyone within earshot

what is important

I pledge to be WALTER this coming YEAR!!!!

Shores, Gunter, & Jack, 2003- You can

improve behavior by 80% just by pointing out

what one person is doing correctly.

Energy flows…………………

…………………Where attention goes.
