Day 1

Bell WorkMary's dad says that he will give her an allowance of $2 the first month,

$4 the second month, $8 the third month, and so on. Mary knows that

her dad is using a base of 2. Mary doesn't think that this is a good deal.

She thinks $50 a month is a better deal. How much will she make in a

year if she does it her way.

Show your work.

d) How much will Mary make in a year if she does what her dad wants? Show your work.

c) Which deal is better, Mary's or her Dad's? By how much?

b) How much will Mary make the twelfth month using her dad's idea? How did you find this number?

I Can….

Multiply and Divide Fractions.

Vocabulary• Fraction- a number that represents part of a whole or part

of a set• Greatest Common Factor- the greatest of the common

factors of two or more numbers• Improper Fraction- a fraction with a numerator that is

greater than or equal to the denominator• Mixed Number- a number that has a whole number part

and a fraction part• Reciprocal – two numbers with a product of 1• Simplest Form- a fraction in which the GCF of the

numerator and denominator is 1

Multiplying Fractions

Essential Understanding: • To multiply a fraction by a fraction, you simply

multiply the numerators, then the denominators. • To multiply a fraction by a whole number or a mixed

number, you must first change the number to an improper fraction. Then, multiply the numerators and the denominators.

Write each product in simplest form.

• Quick Check: Complete problems 1-6 on page 104

Dividing Fractions

Essential Understanding: • To divide a fraction by a fraction, simply flip the

second fraction and multiply. • To divide a fraction by a whole number or a mixed

number, change the number to an improper fraction. Then, flip the second fraction and multiply.

Draw a diagram to show how much water will be needed.

I Can….

• Create story context for equations involving the multiplication and division of fractions

~And~• Use a visual fraction model to show

my work.

Bell Work1) Hakeem’s front porch measures 9 3/4 feet by 4 feet.

Estimate the area of his front porch.

Justify your answer.(Hint: Area = Length x Width)

2) Leslie spread organic fertilizer on 4/5 of her flower pots to

test how much they would grow. If she has 25 flower pots,

how many did she spread fertilizer on?

Justify your answer.
