Because the mission farms changed their environment, their economy changed from hunting and

gathering to farming.

went to Mexico City in 1772?

Spain wanted to strengthen its frontier areas in New Spain to prevent other countries from settling

there. In 1772 they gave Serra the money and

supplies he needed for missions.

They built presidios to guard the missions,

and they built pueblos to provide food for the

presidios and missions.
