Character & Thought

I. Character

A. Character must not be the show of a good man brought from well-being to unfortunate.

Example: The movie “Yes Man” shows that the character is a bad man from the start. Later on in the movie, he turns into a good man.

B. Character should be not too extreme about good and just

• Misfortune is brought by error or weakness, not by bad habit or cor-ruption

• Example: Achilles from the Tro-jan war has a weakness on his heel. Paris, king of Troy, shot him an arrow with a bow and wounded Achilles’ heel during the war.

C. Characters must have speech or action that shows moral purpose

1 The character must have a purpose2 This rule applies to class, depending on the class, the characters will have more

importance.

Example: Martin Luther King Jr. gives out a speech called “I have a dream”.

D. Characters must be true to life, if a character is portrayed in a certain way, then that character should do and say things that is most likely.

1 Must be consistent throughout the play.2 To go with the plot, characters must say things that are relevant to the situation.

Example: Brad Pitt acts as Achilles in the movie “Troy”.

II Thought

-Ability of saying what is pos-sible and related in given conditions.- “Example”

How does it work• 1 Oratory's function is political art and

the art of rehotric (Public sepaking and writing)

• Therefore older poets make their char-acters speak language of civilians.

• Example: when someone is talking to someone, they might pretend to agree when really they disagree.

Character reveals purpose→ showing what kind of things a man choose or avoids.

• Makes the speeches unclear • Speaker are not expressive of char-

acter.• Thought tells the audience what the

characters are going to do next.

When is thought used• Thought is found when something is

proved to be or not to be or when a general expression is announced.

• People might say what they think, if they agree with the situation.

The thought of a character is rhetorical (talking to themselves)

• Shows their emotion

• Characters talk to themselves with-out verbal exposition.

• Example: in the last king of Scotland, Garagan nodded his head as he lis-tened to Amin but inside he was re-ally terrified.

What could it be• Thought could be a prayer, a threat,

a statemant, a question or an an-swer.
