Richard Gough discovered the Cheddar caves between 1827 - 1902
Formerly the caves were underwater and fish lived in them
For a long time the caves were used as mines. Nowadays they are a turist attraction
Cheddar Gorge is situated in the Mendip Hills. The throat was formed by floods during the last 1.2 million years. Water was forced to flow on the surface carving the Gorge.
Every 1,000 years 1 cm of stalactites and stalagmites grows. They are formed by Limestone (calcite- CaCO3).
Calcite precipites and forms theses structures.
When a stalactite and stalagmite join they form a column
The cheddar cheese is conserved in the caves, because there are good temperature and humidity to keep the
cheese
The artificial light and precise humidity into the caves make mosses and lichens to grow
