Chapter activities since last report:
1. Oleksandr Olar attended the International Optics & Photonics 2017 Conference,
which was held in San Diego, California, USA. During the conference Oleksandr
attended several short courses and scientific reports of his interests. There was an
efficient discussion with the most Student SPIE Chapter participants concerning the
further perspectives and development of Chapters. Also, Oleksandr told about our
Chapter progress in recruiting new members and distributing the information about
Optics and Photonics among school-leavers.
2. During the reporting period we hold meetings of our Chapter members (on
Thursdays). There were several scientific seminars and Students’ workshops where the
main aims, tasks and activities of our Students’ SPIE Chapter were outlined and
discussed.
3. The members of our Chapter published more than 20 publications at the reported year
(2017). Some of them in such journals as SPIE Proceedings, Optica Applicata, Optics
and Spectroscopy, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Physics in Medicine and Biology,
Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Journal of Holography and Speckle, Optics
Express, Ukrainian Journal of Physical Optics, JETF Letters and other.
4. Also in this year in Chernivtsi was organized the 13th International Conference
“Correlation Optics 2017” (September 11-15, 2017). The 13th International Conference
on Correlation Optics continues the series of the conferences with the same title held
biannually at Chernivtsi National University (Ukraine) since 1993. The conference
program has included 28 invited talks, 26 regular orals and 97 posters, as well as 3
Invited lectures for SPIE Student Chapters members. The reports were presented by
about 120 researchers from 23 countries: USA, UK, Germany, France, Denmark, Japan,
Australia, Poland, Romania, Czech Republic, Russian Federation, Canada, India, China,
Lithuania, Cameroon, Israel, Finland, Spain, Sweden, and Ukraine.
Topics to be covered:
1. Informative content of statistical optical fields, including optical chaos, singular
optics, polarization optics and coherence
2. Optical correlation devices based on diffractive optical elements, including
optical and digital holography, fractal optics, optical sensors
3. Optical correlation diagnostics, interferometry and microscopy of rough
surfaces and random media.
4. New applications of correlation optics in biology and medicine.
5. Optical techniques, systems and elements of telecommunications.
Among highlights of the conference were: Prof Ye. Fainman (USA), Prof S. Hanson
(Denmark),Prof D.Sampson (Australia), Prof K. Bliokh (Japan), Prof R. Ossikovski
(France), Z. Zalevsky (Israel), Prof G. Montemezzani (France), Prof S. Odoulov
(Ukraine), Prof Wei Wang (UK) and others.
More than 50 graduate, post-graduate and PhD students took part in the conference, and
the special session for young scientists out of the official conference program was
carried out. There are the Invited Speakers for this session: Radu Malureanu (Denmark),
Tatiana Novikova (France), and Zeev Zalevsky (Israel).
Owing to separate funds granted by SPIE for awarding the best oral and poster
presentations of young scientists, the Organizing Committee selected winners with
handing in the SPIE Certificate and cash:
1st place: V. Besaga (Ruhr University of Bochum) - $150;
2st place: M. Szatkokowski (Wroclaw University of Science and Technology) - $100;
2st place: A. Ciesielski (University of Warsaw) - $100;
3st place: O. Kostenyukova (Institute of Low Temperature Physics NASU) - $50;
3st place: Ya. Skrypka (Institute of Physics NASU) - $50;
3st place: D. Ivanskii (Chernivtsi National University) - $50.

Future Chapter activities:
1. Winter workshops and working with the press materials on current research and
achievements in science and technology as participation in creating new courses in
Ukranian in the field of Biomedical Optics, Fiber Optics, Fractal Optics and Holography
(January 2018 - February 2018).
2. Meetings with the students of our university and with school-leavers, in which the
main aims, tasks and activities of our Students’ SPIE Chapter will be outlined and
discussed.
3. Maintaining and upgrading the Chapter library on Optics and Photonics.
