CPL HISTORY

• CPL began after the Great Fire in 1871

• Books were donated by British Citizens

• A board under the Illinois Library Act was established in 1872

• William Poole (the first librarian) built library collections and allowed public access by delivery stations throughout the city.

• By 1969 numerous library branches began to operate.

CPL HISTORY CONTINUED• In 1991 the Harold Washington Library Center was built on Congress Pkwy and State Street.

It’s named after the late Mayor Harold Washington.
