The Australian Dietary Guidelines

So.. Lets get started….

How will you work out what a 4 – 8 year old needs to eat?

There are 3 things to considerThe Australian Guide to Healthy Eating

The Nutritional requirements of children

What they enjoy eating

The Australian Guide to healthy eating

go the website and explore this guide

Nutrition Calculators The Australian Guide to Healthy eating tells you WHAT

to eat, but you also need to know HOW MUCH. Nutritional needs vary depending on your age and

gender. Your energy needs vary depending on your age,

gender, height weight and activity. The Nutrition Calculators on the eat for health website

will guide you to make suitable choices Go to this website and explore the calculators https://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/eat-health-calculators Find out: the energy requirements, the nutritional

requirements and the number of serves per day required by your child.

Write this in a table and keep it for your action plan.

Infants, children and teenagers have special dietary needs because they are growing and developing. They need more energy because they are playing and being active.

Make sure the food you choose is suitable for their needs

How to go about it Start by doing the Balance Gamehttps://www.eatforhealth.gov.au/nutrition-calculators/food-balance Play around with your menu choices to

achieve a balanced menu. Make sure you have the correct amount

from each food group – keep an eye on the dials.

Take screen shots of your menu choices to include in your menu presentation

Choose a main meal recipe for the day. What menu choices did you include for

dinner? Put these into the advanced search

function on taste.com.au Search by ingredient and click the main ingredients you chose for your dinner Choose a recipe that you would like to cook

Analyse your recipe Before you finally choose this recipe, you

need to make sure it is healthy and meets your child’s needs

You do this by using Food Choices to check the nutritional value of the meal

If it doesn’t you will need to change some things – check with your teacher on what to change

When you are sure it’s a great choice, do your food order and email it to penny.mcintyre@ntschools.net

Follow the food order guidelines
