Rolling Manipulation

Definition

• With the minor thenar eminance and dorsoulnar used as the force-applying surface, the operator proceeds cyclical flexion, extension and inward, outward arm-rotating swinging with the elbow joint and his forearm accompanied with extension and flexion of the wrist joint to roll the round back of the hand to and fro on the region to be treated.

1. Preparing posture

• The operator should lower his shoulder and drop his elbow with his arm erected and his palm set upright, press the minor thenar eminance against the part for treatment with his palm and finger joints naturally flexed.

• The operator’s hand back should be kept close to the skin of the operated region.

• The transition of wrist’s flexion and extension should be natural.

• The intensity of force and rhythm should be even.

• The frequency is about 120 times per minute.

Clinical Effect & Application

• Rolling has a large area of stimulation with strong and deep effect.

• Rolling is especially suitable for the operation on the lumbodorsal region, lumbo-buttock region and thick muscle region of the limbs.

• It is good at treating the diseases in motor system and nerve system.

• It has the following effects: • relaxing the muscles and tendons, • promoting blood circulation to remove blood

stasis, dredging the meridians• relieving spasm and pain, relaxing adhesion,

lubricating joints.

Rubbing Manipulation

Definition

• The manipulation performed by rhythmically rubbing the therapeutic part in a circular motion with the palm or the palmar side of the operator’s fingers close to the therapeutic region is called rubbing technique.

Structure of Operation

• The operator is in a sitting position.• Lower shoulder, drop elbow with forearm in a

prone position and palm face downward.

• In the operation, the palmar surface as the power center continuously proceeds circular motion in either clockwise direction or counter-clockwise direction.

• It should be moderate, even and steady, about 100 circles per minute.

Clinical Effect & Application

• Rubbing is mainly applied to operating on the chest, hypochondrium and the epigastric region.

• It has the effects of relieving the depressed liver and regulating the circulation of qi,

• warming the middle-jiao and regulating the stomach, invigorating the spleen, promoting digestion and removing stagnant food.

• It is commonly used to treat such diseases as follows:

• cold of insufficiency type in the middle-jiao , fullness in the epigastric region, diarrhea.

• oppressed feeling in the chest and stagnation of the flow of qi, distending pain in the hypochondrium,injury of the chest.

Scrubbing Manipulation

Definition

• The manipulation of rubbing and scrubbing the therapeutic part to and fro along a straight line with the operator’s palmar face, minor or major thenar eminance is called scrubbing manipulation

Structure of Operation

• In operation, the operator is usually in a standing position.

• This manipulation should be operated along a straight line.

• During the operation, the operating part should be kept close to the skin of the therapeutic region.

• Each treatment is accomplished when the operated part becomes warm.

• About 10 times is usually suitable to each treatment.

• A certain medium is often used, in order to prevent the skin from being abraded and enhance therapeutic effect.

Clinical Effect & Application

• This manipulation can be apply to all parts of the body.

• It has strong rubbing force with a large range of movement, so it has evident warming effect and the function of removing obstruction.

• It has following effect:• Relieving chest stuffiness and regulating

the circulation of qi,• Warming the channels and alleviating

pain,• Expelling pathogenic wind and cold,• Promoting flow of qi and blood

Wiping Manipulation

Definition

• It is performed by softly rubbing the skin of the affected part with the surface of one thumb or surfaces of two thumbs up and down, or right and left, straightly.

Structure of Operation

• In two-hand-wiping, two hands of operator should operate along a straight line.

• If in one direction, two hands should move up and down alternatively;

• If in two direction, two hands should move at same time.

• Frequency should be even, about 100 times per minute.

Clinical Effect & Application

• Wiping is a manipulation of lighter stimulus, mainly applied to head, face, five sense organs, and neck.

• It is commonly used to treat such diseases as follows:

• headache, dizziness, facial paralysis, prosopalgia, myopia, and stiffness and pain of the nape.
