Christian & the Ballot

Christian & the Ballot

1. WHY should we vote?

2. WHO should we vote for?

3. WHAT should we do?

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

Christians are citizens of 2 kingdoms

• Kingdom of God (Phil 3:20)

Phil 3:20 (NLT)

“But we are citizens of heaven, where the

Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly

waiting for him to return as our Saviour.”

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

Christians are citizens of 2 kingdoms

• Kingdom of God (Phil 3:20)

• Earthly nation (Luke 20:25, Rom 13:1-3)

Luke 20:25 (NIV)

“He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar

what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

Christians are citizens of 2 kingdoms

• Kingdom of God (Phil 3:20)

• Earthly nation (Luke 20:25, Rom 13:1-3)

Romans 13:1-3 (The Message) “…Be a good

citizen. All governments are under God.

Insofar as there is peace and order, it’s God’s

order. So live responsibly as a citizen. ….”

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

2. We are Salt & Light

“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its

saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no

longer good for anything except to be thrown out

and trampled by men. You are the light of the world.

A city on a hill cannot be hidden. ….let your light

shine before men, that they may see your good deeds

and praise your Father in heaven.”

Matthew 5:13-16

"The function of salt is largely negative: it prevents decay. The function of light is positive: it illumines the darkness. So Jesus calls his disciples to exert a double influence on the secular community, a negative influence by arresting its decay and a positive influence by bringing light into darkness. For it is one thing to stop the spread of evil; it is another to promote the spread of truth, beauty and goodness.”

Romans 13:4

“For the one in

authority is

God’s servant

for your

good…”

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

2. We are Salt & Light

3. We are Praying

1 Timothy 2:1-2 “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

WHY should we vote ?

1. We are Dual Citizens

2. We are Salt & Light

3. We are Praying

WHO should we vote for ?

1 Timothy 2:1-2 “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people - for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”

WHO should we vote for ?

Can we vote for non-Christians?

King Cyrus of Persia (2 Chron 36:22-23; Ezra 1:1-2)

Pharaoh (Genesis 41:35-57)

Hiram, King of Tyre (1 Kings 5:1-12)

King Nebuchadnezzar (Daniel 2:46-49)

“We must be honest and

acknowledge that there are non-

Christians or non-evangelicals

who share far more of our

worldview and policy concerns

than some others who identify

as Christians. The stewardship of our vote demands that we support those

candidates who most clearly and consistently

share our worldview and combine these

commitments with the competence to serve

both faithfully and well.”
