Video Data Management System (VDMS) - Overview

OER IPT/VDMSVDMS Objectives

• Provide timely online information about NOAA’s Office of Exploration and Research video data to the general public.

• Educate our Nation about NOAA oceanographic expeditions and underwater explorations through digital video and related information.

• Archive and preserve unique video and related data for future generations.

• Collaborate with NOAA librarians, data managers, and scientists from different NOAA offices and programs.

• Use or extend existing library tools, guidelines, and metadata standards to support new media formats: digital video, digital image, and digital text documents.

• Enhance data access and metadata sharing between NCL NOAALINC, NODC Ocean Archive System (OAS), and NCDDC MerMaid catalogs, Digital Atlas, CoRIS, and ASFA.

NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research (OER) Expeditions, 2001-present

• 5-12 Signature Explorations per year.

• 1-12 Summary Explorations per year.

VDMS archives and provide either

online or off-line access to over 3000 OER digital video tapes or DVD discs.

OER Cruise Products Received in VDMS

• Original/copy of the digital video tapes from OER signature and non-signature expeditions (MiniDV; DVCAM; DVD)

• Digital video highlights and clips (MiniDV; DVCAM; DVD; online files)

• Digital images - data and highlights (JPEG, GIFF, TIFF; on DVD, online)

• Video annotations (Microsoft Excel, comma-delimited text, Word, etc.)

• Video and image highlight annotations (Microsoft Word; PDF)

• Cruise reports (Microsoft Word; PDF)

• Lesson plans (DVD; HTML; PDF)

• Expedition Binders (Print)

• Post-cruise peer review publications, including journal articles (PDF)

VDMS Statistics (FY2008-FY2009)• Oct. 1, 2007- August 31, 2009

- 60 GB OER video and image data accessible- over 671,505 online requests (318,498 FY2009)- 7.1 TB of downloaded data

How Parent Meet Their Children

• NOAA Library creates – Parent metadata in MARC21 standard

• NCDDC creates – Child metadata for each product from the expedition in FGDC standard.

• Crosswalk developed to map both metadata schemas.

• Converter developed in NCDDC/MERMAid system to convert FGDC to MARCXML record.

• MarcEdit freeware used to farther convert MARCXML to MARC21 record.

• All Children records are linked with their Parent record.

Developed Crosswalk:

• helped NOAA scientists to generate MARCXML records,

• and collaborate in metadata exchange,

• helped to developed converter (FGDC to MARCXML)

• and finally to convert MARCXML to MARC21, using MarcEdit application

What is MarcEdit? http://people.oregonstate.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/downloads.html

Developed by Terry Reese, Oregon State University

– Written in C#– Continues to be freely available– Supports both UTF/MARC8 charactersets– MARC Neutral– XML aware

MarcEdit is a freeware application designed specifically to make the batch modification of MARC records a quick process. MarcEdit is a powerful off-line editing utility.

How MarcEdit works for NOAA Library

• Using MarcBreaker - Converting MARCXML to MARC21 - Converting MARC21 to FGDC

• Using MarcEditor for: - Batch file conversion - Batch file editing - Batch file loading into NOAALINC

Batch conversionMARCXML to MARC21

MarcEditor – Combinesall records to one big filefor global editing to comply with the Library standards (LCNA name authorities, LCSH subject headings, etc.)

Once all MARCXML files are converted to MARC21 format, and all records are edited, the record combined file is upload into NOAALINC. Some final touches are expected (i.e. applicable URL(s), call numbers, etc.)
