UNIVERSITY DEMONSTRATION POLICY ENDORSED

Notre Dame1s policy for dealing with protest activities which disrupt

the normal operations of th e University or infringe upon the rights of

others has received overwhelming endorsement and strong editorial

support. The President of th e University declared on February 17th that

”anyone or any group that substitutes force for rational p e rs u a s io n , be

i t violent or non-violent/ 1 faces o n - th e -s p o t suspension, expulsion and

action by civil authorities. Of nearly one thousand telegrams and

letters received by the President’s office, only a half dozen are

critical or negative. Newspapers which have published s tro n g editorial

endorsements of the U n iv e rs i ty stand include the L o u is v i l le Courier-

Journal, Philadelphia I n q u ir e r , Dallas Morning News, Chicago Tribune,

Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, South Bend Tribune, Indianapolis Star

and the New York Daily News.

But the m e an s som e s tuden ts - - a sm a ll , i r re sp o n s ib le m in o r i ty - - have em ployed re f le c t an im patience with d e m o c ra t ic p r o c e s s e s , an in to le ran ce of le g itim a te ly co n s ti tu ted a u th o ri ty , and a com plete d is re g a rd fo r the r ig h ts of o th e rs .

V iolence and v a n d a l ism have m a rk e d m any of these p ro ­te s t s , and the r ig h ts of the m a jo r i ty of the s tuden ts have been g r o s s ly ab u sed .
