TheMSctrackBuildingEngineeringoffersavariedandbroadprogrammethatdealswitheveryaspectofbuildingengineeringoverthelifespanofabuilding.

Asacivilengineer,youneedabroadrangeofknowledgeinordertobeabletomakeavaluablecontributiontotheconstructionanddesignofbuildings.Thatiswhythistrackcoverseverythingfromtheplanningphaseuptotherealisationofabuilding.Wealsoconsidertheoptionsforthereuseofbuildings.Sustainabilityisinextricablylinkedtoconstructionandthetimesinwhichwelive;wemusttakeaccountoffuturegenerations.Whatismore,becausetheaestheticaspectsofbuildingsarebecomingmoreandmoreimportantduetotheirvisualimpactonourhabitat,architecturalandindustrialdesignarebecomingincreasinglyimportant,too.Howelsewouldyouknowwhetheranarchitecturalideaissound,fromanengineer’spointofview?

TheBuildingEngineeringtrackofferstwospecialisations.Thepurposeofthissegmentationistoallowyoutochoosethedirectionwithinthetrackthatsuitsyoubest.Itisafirststepindefiningyourfuturecareerdirection.

BuildingTechnology&Physicsfocusesonthetechniquesthatcontributetopeople’sexperienceandenjoymentofabuilding;thinkoftheindoorclimateandappearanceofabuilding,forexample.Youwilllearntotranslatethearchitect’swishesintoreality.Thismeansdeterminingwhichmaterialswillbeusedforthefinishingofabuildingandensuringthatthebuildingissustainable.BuildingTechnology&Physicsisthescienceofdesigninghigh-performancebuildingsthataredurable,comfortable,energy-efficient,affordableandhealthy.

Toaddressmanybuildingproblems,weneedauniquemixofheatandmasstransferphysics,acoustics,materialscience,constructiontechnology,humanphysiology,andengineeringanalysisanddesign.

StructuralDesignhasemergedinresponsetomodern-daybuildingdevelopments.Increasingly,thedesignphaseofbuildingsinvolvesnotonlystructuralexpertsandarchitects,butalsostructuraldesigners.These‘designingengineers’actasabridgebetweenarchitectsandthestructuralexpertswhofocusonverificationofstandards,dimensioninganddetailing.Theapproachisbasedontheprinciplesofmechanicsandknowledgeofmaterials.

Futurestudentsthatwanttolinkcreativitywithtechnologicalprofundity,chooseforBuildingEngineering.ThisMaster'sofferstwodirections:BuildingTechnologyofPhysicsandStructuralDesign.IchoseforthelatterbecauseIwantedtofocusmoreonbuildingdesignandbecomepartofthedesignteamwitharchitectsandotherconstructionspecialists.Theuniversityrespondscleverlytothatobjectivebyencouragingfacultiestocollaborate.DuringtheHighRiseworkshop,forexample,wewerechallengedtodesignafullyintegratedandinnovativeskyscrapertogetherwithstudentsofthefacultyofArchitecture.Besidethefactthatitisfuntogettoknowstudentsfromotherfaculties,wealsolearnedtospeaktheirdesignlanguage–inmyopinionanessentialqualityforabuildingengineer.ThisalsocorrespondstomyexperienceduringmyinternshipatengineeringfirmArupinLondon,whereIwasgiventheopportunitytokeepondevelopingmyselfinthisdynamicfield.Thiswassuchafantasticexperience,Idecidedtostayandappliedforajob;IamnowonthevergeofcontinuingmycareerintheUK.Trustme,whetheryouwanttoworkoncomplexbuildingsintheNetherlandsoronimpressivestructuresinDubai,theworldisyourplaygroundasabuildingengineerfromDelftUniversityofTechnology.

Preliminarystructuraldesignandfinancialfeasibilitystudyofatransportablemultifunctionalstadium.Increasingnumbersoflarge-scale,high-qualitystadiumsarebeingleftvacantaftertheeventforwhichtheywerebuilt.Therefore,ademountableandtransportablemulti-functionalA-venuestadiumhasbeendesigned.StructuralfeasibilityoftherotatingtowerinDubai.Glasscolumns:afundamentalstudytoslenderglasscolumnsassembledfromrectangularmonolithicflatglassplatesundercompressionasabasistodesignastructuralglasscolumnforapavilion.Auser-centredre-designofindoorcomfortforthefacultyofCivilEngineeringandGeoscienceswithanenergy-consciousapproach.Flexiblemouldforproductionofdouble-curvedconcreteelements.

Duetothecomplexityofbuildings,thedevelopmentofbuildingmaterials,theever-changinguserrequirementsandnewtechnologicalinsights,therearemanybuildingengineers.Gettingallofthesespecialiststocooperateefficientlyisasgreatachallengeastheactualconstructionofbuildings.Astherearemanyspecialisedcompaniesinvolvedinconstruction,thereareextensivecareeropportunities.Thinkofbuildingcontractors,realestatedevelopers,institutionalinvestors,architectural,engineeringandconsultancyfirms,researchinstitutesandeducationalinstitutes.

Agoodcivilengineerhasawideknowledgeofthefieldofbuilding.Notonlybeabletocalculateanystructureoutofanymaterial(whichstillisthefoundationofagoodengineerincivilengineering)butalsoabletotalkwithpeoplethatactuallyhavetobuildthedesignmadebytheengineer.Ifanengineerhasnoorlimitedknowledgeofthewaystructuresarerealisedorofprojectmanagementorofbuildingphysicsthisdiscussionisuselessforbothparties.ThereforeBuildingEngineeringtrackoffersallscientificinformationtobenotaspecialistbutawell-informedgeneralistthatisabletodiscussaboutallaspectsofbuilding.ThemorethanrequiredknowledgeofsustainablebuildingandenergysavingtechniquesarealsoimplementedintheBuildingEngineeringtrackleadingtoengineersthatcangiveanimportantcontributiontoabetterworld.

IfyouholdaDutchBScdegreeinCivilEngineering(CiTG),Architecture(BK)orPolicy,TechnologyandManagement(TBM)thatiscloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,youwillbeadmitteddirectly.IfyourundergraduateprogrammeisnotcloselyrelatedtotheMaster’sprogramme,however,youwillberequiredtotakeadditionalcoursesinwhatiscalledabridgingprogramme.Thismaybeastandardprogrammeoritmaybetailoredtoyourspecificsituation.
