DEEP SEA OIL DRILLING DANGERS By: John Nolan
In the past years we have affected our oceans with oil. Is it worth it?
Deep sea oil drilling has affected our oceans when the pipes breaks and can kill much sea life.
For example 8, 000 sea creachers were reported dead in just six months of the BP oil spill .
Also the dangers were that people can get killed in these explosions like in the BP oil spill killed 11 people
and left 17 injured. The spill stopped in 2010 but there is still crude oil washing up on the shores and is af-
fecting the environment .More disasters can happen in until people get their head out of the sand and do
something! Also 4,000 of barrels were dumped into the ocean during the BP oil spill. This may happened
again if we don’t stop drilling. And when the Exxon VALDEZ happened they dumped 11 million gallons into
the ocean. Also 3.19 million barrels of oil was dumped into the Gulf of Mexico in one of these terrible
spills. 16,000 miles were affected too in the BP oil spill and maybe more in future spills will be affected if
we don’t stop. Animals are getting covered in oil and die. If we don’t do some thing we might kill half of our sea life. Also
these companies’ owe money for the entire damage .For example BP owes over 56 million dollars for cleanup. Also if we keep
wasting all of this oil in the water and keep drilling we could destroy our ocean. And how can we fix this? We could protest and
get the company’s to drill less oil.
Deep Sea Oil Drilling is when people
put pipes in the ground and suck up oil
from the sea. When people deep sea oil
drill it can harm ocean animals, like
whales and dolphins. Even though it is
bad, some people do it anyway.
Leaking Pipes
When you take oil from the sea the
pipes can break and crack and oil could
spill into the
sea. One
humongous
oil spill was
the gulf oil
spill. The
gulf oil spill is one of
the worst oil spills in
the U.S. history. It
killed 11 people be-
cause of a explosion of the pipes. Peo-
ple put camras in the sea, to only find
out that the BP pipe was leaking about
42 miles of oil off the coast of Louisi-
ana, for 87 days. The leaking pipe was
stopped July 15, 2010.
Why Is It Bad?
Some people think taking oil from
the sea is good, but some people think
it is bad. When you are burning fossil
fuels it causes global warming and
stronger hurricanes, which threatens
offshore oil being proposed, and causes
more global warming. Also the oil that
we don’t get can harm animals. We do
need the oil but, can we at least try to
be more careful so we don’t pollute the
ocean and hurt animals.
Is It Good?
Deep sea oil drilling is bad for the
ocean and for the animals. We do need
the oil, but is it worth it to have strong-
er hurricanes, more global warming, ex-
plosions that kill people, and much
more? Some people do. Oil is very im-
portant, but if we drill every beach, Na-
tional Park, and forests, we would still
not have enough oil to meet our grow-
ing demand.
The Dangers Of Deep Sea Oil Drilling By
Mya Raitses 5-2
This is the BP
leaking pipe.
Solution
The solution to deep sea oil
drilling is to be more carful when
collecting oil from the sea. The
pipes should be more secure so
they don’t leak like every time
they want oil from the sea. There
are a lot more solutions to deep
sea oil drilling, but this is just one
of them.
Conclusion
Drilling oil is good and bad.
We do need the oil, but we don’t
want to hurt the animals and ruin
the ocean. Some people just don’t
care about nature, but at least
some people do.
NO DEEP SEA OIL
DRILLING!!!!!!!
Introduction
Earthquakes can destroy most of our natural
resources. Did you know that if an earthquake
happened in New York City most of the build-
ings would fall down! This is because the east-
ern part of the United States is not used to
having earthquakes. For example, Florida and
North Dakota have the fewest amounts of
earthquakes in America.
How Do Earthquakes Affect Us
Earthquakes can destroy our Earth,
communities, injure people, and lead to many
deaths. The effects of an earthquake can in-
clude many of these examples such as col-
lapsed buildings, burst water pipes that lead
to flooding. People can lose their homes. Gas
pipes can also burst and lead to fires and ex-
plosions. Transportation links, such as road,
highways, and rail can be disrupted and dam-
aged. This often leads delays in emergency
help. Earthquakes can also cause extreme de-
struction due to volcanoes and tsunamis.
How we can prevent damage from
earthquakes
People can prevent damage from earthquakes
in some way. Your next question is probably
“how”? Well, Japan has a giant catfish called
Namazu. Namazu is responsible for all of Ja-
pans earthquakes.
Citizens of New York know that there is 1% of
a chance that NY can get an earthquake. But
what if an
earthquake
NY. The state
of New York
should have a
person who
watches if a
tsunami or an
earthquake
happens.
1556 Earthquake
The earthquake of 1556 was a terrible earth-
quake. An estimated amount of 830,000 peo-
ple died. The magnitude of the earthquake
was 8.0 to 8.3 was released by this earth-
quake. Many buildings fell down! It took more
than one year to get the city back to 100%
normal.
Conclusion
After you read this article, you can prepare for
an earthquake.( if an earthquake ever hap-
pened). You can conclude that earthquakes
can cause a lot of damage.
Earthquakes By Nicholas Elarde
Earthquakes are devastating to improp-
erly built structures.
When you hear hydraulic fracturing you think of
fracking and when you hear fracking you think of
“Fracking is good. We need the fossil fuel.” Well
fracking is bad and good in so many ways.
What Is Fracking?
Hydraulic fracturing is fracking. Fracking is a pop-
ular way to remove fossil fuel from natural gas. Frack-
ing could be a big fuel breakthrough. Fracking has so
much of potential; it could transform the world’s en-
ergy markets. There are good reasons why fracking is
good and there are bad reasons why fracking is bad.
Here are some reasons for good and bad.
The Pros
Fracking is also good for the world. Fracking is be-
coming available on American soil. That means the
cost of importing oil will be shortened significantly.
Fracking rekindle old wells and makes the natural gas
in previously wells accessible. Because of this, it
makes use of the machinery already in place which
also cuts the cost. Natural gas resources have al-
ready expanded by nearly 65%. Although hydraulic
fracturing is pricier than traditional drilling, the cost
of an oil barrel is so big, that the process has become
financially
feasible.
The Cons
The bad side of fracking is the emissions form frack-
ing are twice of coal and could extremely increase air
pollution around the site. Another reason is that
fracking vanishes a large amount of water with some
wells requiring between one and eight million gallons
of water to crack the rock. In some cases, only 30-
50% of water is redis-
covered. Quick fix
chemicals are use in
the fracking process,
sometimes keeping
nearly 600 different
chemicals. This can
certainly be a concern
for the personnel
working at the site,
along with the tainted
rediscovered water.
It has been described that methane levels in ground
water near fracking sites have been up to 17 times
higher than natural. This will have a severe impact on
local residents.
Fracking is bad and good in some many different
reasons why. Fracking hurting the world and we
need to help the world. Figure out a way to use frack-
ing while not hurting the world. Now when you
hear fracking , you probably think “ Is fracking good
or is it bad?” . And you are right, is fracking good or
bad. No one really knows if fracking good or bad.

Anyone who pans for gold always thinks they
are going to be rich and be rewarded by the
glitter of the colors that they find at the
bottom of the gold pan. Although mining for
gold is an exercise and a out door activity
experienced in prospecting are rewarding also
there is only a few thrills to some people that
they found gold.
Some people today think that there is no
more gold and every who mined for gold left
nothing for anyone else but that is not true u
can find gold in a lot of place like Alaska,
Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho,
Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska,
Nevada, New Mexico, north Dacota, Oregon,
south Dacota, Utah, Washington, and
Wyoming.
Did you know that ground water collected
from wells, springs, and drill holes may
provide clues to the presence of deposites. As
ground water flows through the deposite
minute amounts of gold are leached from the
rocks. These can sometimes be detected in
ground water samples collected from wells
located down gradient from the deposit?
Did you know that Idaho was once a leading
placer mining state. Also one of the chiefs
dreading areas in the Boise Basin a few miles
northeast of Boise in the state west central
part of the state. Other placer deposites are
located amough the salmon river and on the
clear water river and nits other tributes,
particulary at ELK city,
pierce, and Orofino, extreamly fine-grained
(or flour) gold occurs in sand deposits along
the snake river in southern Idaho. Placers in
Colorado have been mined in the fairplay
district in park country and in the brecken
ridge distric in summit country. In both areas
large dredges were used during the peak
activity in the 1930s.
These are a lot of the reasons people want
gold. And some of the people who mine for
gold don’t realis that it is ruining the earth.
And some of the people don’t even care they
want to just get money and they don’t take
care of the earth like some people do and
some people work hard taking care of the
earth and other people destroy it by gold
mining.

oil drilling By Gianna Santopietro
Do you think oil drilling is a good
thing, well you are wrong oil drilling
is distorting the envierment . Oil
companies think oil drilling is a good
thing because they get payed for do-
ing it. What oil driller don’t know is
What Is oil and Why do people
need oil ?
Did you know what oil is well you are lucky I
know ever thing about oil. Oil is a viscous liq-
uid derived from petroleum ,especially for
use as a fuel or lubriallt. We mainly use
petroleum to generate energy, like fuel for
cars and airplanes and to heat homes, but
there are many other things to do with it ,
such other things to do with it , such as cray-
ons, ink, cds and dvd ,PLASTIC and tires .
How do we get oil? What is the his-
tory of oil drilling?
Did you know that oil driller drill in the ground
for oil and did you know that Edwin drake
drilled the first oil well in pennsyuana.
How does oil drilling affect the
environment?
Did you ever know that oil drilling is affecting
the environment. The process of drilling and
extracting oil is complex and leaves many
opportunities for witch frguep team members
have witnessed firsthand.
How do oil spills affect people
People who live near water count on seafood
and beaches that are clean for their health.
For example ,20% of the seafood we eat
comes from the golf of Mexico. Damage to
the fisheries will lead to loss of food and mon-
ey . oil spills and beaches covered in oil will
affect tourism, oil contaminated to be close
for health and safety reasons.
Conclusion
Here are good and also the bad about oil drill-
ing .We should work hard to stop oil drilling .

GOLD MINING GONE BAD
BY NICK NACCARATO Gold mining creates a big toxic waste.
Gold mining destroys landscapes and many
other things. The Amazon River got destroyed
because of this. The community says that gold
is more than benefits.
Community concerns
Gold mining is difficult and dangerous work.
But millions of miners get no wages. It’s a
waste of time. The heavy machines can hit
water pipes and all kinds of other things.
There is 600,000 people trying to risk their
lives to get gold. This creates a huge
waste .Gold mining is violence, and danger.
Gold mining is deadly because men and other
soldiers buy weapons’ just to get gold. In 1998
5,000,000 people were killed because of this.
Gold miners lost their lives from starvation
and other things. People are dead because
they were victims with hot tempers to get
gold .you can’t trust anyone. Gold mining is a
very dirty process. Gold mining harms the
health problems of miners and communities
by releasing dangerous sub stances into the
air and water, mercury and cyanide the two
most common gold extraction agents are toxic
to humans. Pulse health problems of life style.
There are Gold miners from South Africa say-
ing that there reporting that miners are get-
ting diseases, THIS IS DANGEROUS. The gold
miners are getting the disease when they’re
going home.
RIGHTS
Land mines often require a significant amount
of land to operate but communities may rely
on that same land for housing, farming, ranch-
ing and other processes. battles over land are
often the result, with local communities losing
out.
Why are people so desperate for gold mining?
Why don’t people just live their lives like nor-
mal people? Instead of gold mining live your
lives. If you want to gold mine try not to de-
stroy the land .
DID YOU KNOW: THE AMAZON RIVER GOT DESTROYED BECA USE GOLD MINING.
When you hear gold mining it makes
you think of money right? Does it
make you think of destruction well
that’s what it is doing to are world.
What is gold and gold
mining?
Gold mining is the process of mining gold un-
der the ground. Gold mining it not just not dig-
ging a big hole you need a lot equipment and
big machines to just mind for gold. It is a very
hard job to do. Gold is a yellowish, brownish
metal find under the ground and it is mind for.
Sixty-five percent of gold is used in jewel-
ry .Another 25 percent is also used in ceramics,
electrical, and electronic applications. Gold
powder is used for tinting enamel and making
a special glass called ruby glass.
Things good about gold
mining?
We need gold because gold is made out of are
jewelry, money and much more things. Gold
helps as in every day life’s, but why do people
want gold? THE number one reason is they
wont to become rich and they won’t fancy jew-
elry. Gold is in electronics .So we need gold.
What is gold mining doing to
the environment and people?
Gold mining is ruining are world .There are
cutting down trees to dig the holes and that is
where the animals homes are. Toxic waste is
even going in lakes, rivers and a lot more. Gold
mining is one of the most deadly forms of min-
ing. It causes a lot more global mercury pol-
lutes then any other source. Gold mining does
a lot to as they cut down trees witch we need
them to breath .Toxic waste goes in are water
were the fish and what if the toxic waste goes
in the water we drink ? Gold mining is also re-
sponsible for releasing a lot of mercury in the
amazon’s air and water.
Conclusion
The ways we can stop this is stop cutting tress
down and clean the toxic waste that goes in the
lakes, rivers and much more places. We can
mind were no animals are. So we should stop
gold mining. This is the good, and bad about
gold mining. We should stop gold mining in till
it ruins the environment and we don’t have so-
lution.
The Dangers of Gold Mining
By Isabelle Clementi
This is one of the big machines
to gold mind
Everybody loves to see the sight of gold. But would you like to see the sight of toxic waste on
gold? Did you know that over 20 tons of toxic waste goes on a 0.333 ounce gold ring? But the de-
struction of gold mining became very devastating. The environmental damage left from gold mining
can last generations.
Gold mining is difficult and dangerous work. Millions of Gold Miners earn low wages or are
exploited by dishonest middlemen. Dangerous working conditions can cause illness, injury, or even
death. The risks are highest for the estimated 600,000 children who work as gold miners. For too
many communities, the costs of gold mining are far greater than the benefits. Gold mining has fueled
a tragic Civil War in the Democratic Republican of Congo, led to higher crime rates, facilitated the
spread of disease, and threatened indigenous cultures-all while failing to lift local communities out
of poverty. Gold mining today relies on practices that are extremely harmful to the environment.
Open pit mining devastates the landscape while cyanide heap leaching and mercury amalgamation
contaminate. water, air, and soil
Modern industrial gold mining creates 20 tons of toxic waste on every gold ring. Modern In-
dustrial Gold Mining destroys landscapes and creates huge amounts of toxic waste. Also, Dirty Gold
Mining has ravaged landscapes contaminated water supplies, and contributed to the destruction of
vital ecosystems. Cyanide, mercury, and other toxic substances are regularly released into the envi-
ronmental due to dirty gold
Due to the use of dirty practices such as open pit mining and cyanide heap leaching,
mining companies generate 20 tons of toxic waste for every 0.333 ounce gold ring. The waste is usu-
ally a gray liquid sludge, is laden with deadly Cyanide and toxic heavy metals. Gold Mining is fueling a
deadly Civil War in the Democratic Republican of Congo. Since 1998, more than 5 million people have
lost their lives of violence, diseases, and starvation associated with the war. This war is one of the
worst humanitarian catastrophes since World War II. global trade, helping to stem the violence. Also,
a rise in gold prices has led to a modern gold rush. About 15 million people worldwide now make a
living as artisanal gold miners, panning or digging for gold.
Golden Destruction By
Michael Tomasino
Just because of Gold Mining, It has caused
the destruction of the Amazon Rain Forest.
Although the war is an ethnic conflict, it is also a fight to control the supply of gold and other mineral re-
sources. Rebels often take over gold mining communities and force local miners to give up a portion of their
earnings. Even the soldiers use the profits to buy more weapons. When the gold is exported, it is blended
with gold and other sources, making it indistinguishable in the global gold supply. Despite a peace settle-
ment, violence in the eastern Congo continued. In 2010, the US congress passed a law requiring large US
companies to disclose the origins of certain “conflict minerals” in their products. It is hoped that increased
transparency will make it stop.
In conclusion, over many years of
the past, gold mining has turned everything into a bloodshed war. In other countries however, it gets even
worse. People are fighting for gold to get rich. Will gold mining stop? Well, that is a problem we have to
solve.
Good as gold What makes gold so valuable?
By Kyle Hendrickson
Gold was first discovered shining yellow nuggets. Throughout history, gold has always been associated with gods, with immortality and with wealth. Through-out the world gold has always had value to humans, even before it was money. We know this is true because of the great efforts made to find it. Searching for gold was worldwide going back for thousands of years. Gold was the first metal widely known to our Species and is the easiest metal to work with. There are four different traits that give gold its value. There are ductility, mallea-bility, indestructibility and rarity. Ductil-ity measures how much a metal can be drawn out into a wire. One ounce of gold can be converted into more than 50 miles of gold wire. Gold wire is used in electronics. Gold is an electric con-ductor. Malleability means that gold can be made into different things. For example, gold can be made into jewelry or into a statue. This happens
because gold can be melted. Gold is indestructible. It has high resistance levels and does not easily corrode. This happens because gold can be melted. Gold is one of the rarest natural re-sources on Earth. There is approximately 150,000 tons of gold that people have mined over the past 6,000 years. So, when someone tells you that you are ‘’good as gold’’ definitely consider it a complement because you are rare and valuable!
Can You Copper Me? (Mine).
Miners mining pickax’s hitting rocks but most of the miners are mining copper.
The problem about, effecting environment is…Copper Mining when copper was first mined in ancient van-
ished race between 5000 and 1200 B.C.( before Christ) A copper mine is being build animals and plants get
plowed over. There is a higher chance that the copper mine can make animals and plants to become endan-
gered or extinct.in copper mines soils and rock may contain naturally occurring radioactive materials (normal)
Overall the problem that is effecting the environment is Copper Mining. Over all I think copper mining is ef-
fecting the environment.
Copper mining is effecting the environment and the world as we know it. There are over 28 copper mines in
the United States. Escondida, Copper mine in Chile, is the largest copper mine in the world. Some-
times copper mines will be a lot smaller… like a lot smaller. Sometimes the mine is so small that it
doesn't look like a coper mine. It is also not safe for the miners for them to mine for example if like a
TNT goes off some how in a mine and all of the miners are still under ground and the TNT goes off, the
whole cave falls down and collapse on the miners. Over all, all of the copper mines are dangerous to
our environment our world.
Copper mining is effecting environment in many different bad ways. I think a salutation for copper mining is
that we should destroy some of the copper mines right now there should be about 10-15 copper
mines in the United States since we need copper for pennies. We could also could maybe put the cop-
per mines in places that are abandon for example like places wear no plants or animals live. Over all
copper mining is effecting our world our environment…
Over all this dilema is making our environment a chaos. Hopefully the government or some one or some
thing is going to change our environment about copper mining. But copper mining is really important
but it can cause chaos to our envirement, our world.
Glossary:
Delema:means a situation in which a diffi-
cult choice has to be made between two or
more alternatives, especially equally unde-
sirable ones.

tion or particles.

Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend! By
Riley Eaton
Diamonds. You might wear jewelry with diamonds, but I bet you haven’t even
wondered about how diamonds are created or how about how diamonds get
from the ground to you! So now you might be thinking and wanting to learn more
about this topic.
Catoca, Fucauma, Luarica, Damtshaa, Jwaneng, Letlhakane, Orapa, Baken, Culli-
nan, Finsch, Kimberley, Koffiefontein, Venetia, Murowa, Williamson, Letseng, Vic-
tor, Jericho, EKATI, Daviak, Snap Lake, Gahcho Kue are all diamond mines where all
diamonds are from. Now you are probably wondering how diamonds are formed
but if you are not well I am going to tell you. All diamonds are formed the same
way but how is fascinating. Diamonds are formed by carbon being exposed to ex-
treme heat and pressures deep within Earth’s mantle.
So now we have to get all these diamonds out of these mines. How we do this is
by machines but with all this energy being used there could be a global climate
change. But they still have to refill the mines, and again we are all using all this en-
ergy. Diamonds mining is effecting the environment one by one and we know it.
In the end diamond mining is not the best thing for the environment. A solution
would be to stop cutting down natural habitats in the rainforest. Diamond mining
is one of the many environmental issues that need to stop.
Gold mining is a very destructive type of
mining and destroys many landscapes but
there are some solutions to this! Gold
miner companies could replace cyanide
with non-toxic corn starch in the gold
mines or mining in places that have no
habitats or ground that may be used for
property or buildings. These solutions can
be done if gold miners focused more on
where they make mining tunnels or what
their surroundings are around the land
they are going to use for mining and if
they see buildings or habitats and such
they might not want to mine
There are also many ways you and your
friends/family members can help solve
some simple gold mining problems in
your area like maybe if you see a abandon
area around your neighborhood you know
was used for gold mining or just any sort
of mining you could ask your parents or
guardians if you would be able to do
something about it to fix the damages
done to that part of your area. Also even
just recycling could help.
There are many issues to our environ-
ment that were because of gold mining,
like the ground being torn up or toxic
waste on the ground but there are some
ways you can avoid doing those kind of
things just in your everyday lives like re-
cycling batteries, batteries have toxic
waste, or don’t dig in areas for fun that
may be an animal’s habitat.
Gold mining is not such a bad idea when
you think of the amount of money you
could make off it but once you start dig-
ging it just turns into a money pit… mean-
ing you will be spending money constantly
over and over again on the same issue.
Also you will actually be destroying land
that could be used by an animal who lost
its habitat or land that could be used for
houses or work buildings…therefore gold
mining could be a horrible idea, lets solve
these problems together and make gold
mining safer!

Oil Drilling was Good….Until Now
By
Kaitlyn Seitz
Figuring It Out
Oil drilling is a way of getting oil out of the ground. To do this first the land
must be clear and leveled. You also need to make access roads. Next since water is used in drilling, there must be a source of water nearby. Then you must dig a reserved pit, which is used to dis-pose rock cuttings and drilling mud dur-ing the drilling process and lines it with plastic to protect the environment. If the site is an ecologically sensitive area, like marsh or wilderness, then the mud and rock cuttings must be disposed off site-trucked away instead of being placed in a pit . Then once you get all of the equipment you’re ready to start oil drilling, but it isn’t that simple.
Is Oil Drilling A Problem?
The most common problem is oil spills. Most oil spills range from 50 to 250 mil-lion gallons. The largest oil spill was in Kuwait, Gulf War. Some people think that we should stop oil drilling, but not everyone thinks this way. Other people think that we should continue oil drilling because we need the oil, but do people know that oil isn’t our only source of en-ergy?
Did you know that oil spills are affecting our health? People are getting contaminated with oil by eating fish such as shrimp. Cer-tain allergies like dust are also starting because of oil drill-ing. Some people are also drinking contaminated water, the oil is leaking into the water. The oil is al-so giving people skin rashes that require daily attention and Major head-aches. So here’s a tip, don’t make con-tact with oil.
So let’s Rethink
People can help by switching their oil source to solar, wind, gas, water, geo-thermal and biomass. Now we know all about the pros and cons of oil drilling. We also found out what oil drilling can cause. So next time (if you’re an adult) you may try switching your energy source to something other then oil. That is why you should think about the af-fects of oil drilling.
Oil spills don’t just affect us, it also affects animals such as otters.

For decades the world has been dependent on oil, but
this will have to change when the world’s oil reserves
have all been depleted. Oil is one of the most essen-
tial commodities people have ever known. Our de-
pendence on it has reached such an extent that life
without oil is almost unimaginable. When oil runs out,
it will affect everything from travel to food. A world
without oil will greatly affect our daily lives.
Travel
Unless you walk or cycle everywhere, when you travel
you use oil. All modes of transportation like cars, vans,
motorbikes, planes and ships depend on oil to run.
Out of all the types of transportation, airplanes de-
pend on oil the most and therefore will likely be the
most impacted. What is likely to happen is that, espe-
cially for long-distance, air travel will once again be-
come expensive. Airplanes will be something for the
only the wealthy to enjoy on a regular basis.
This would have a huge impact on our current global
society, as people would be less willing to move if they
knew it may not be financially possible to return home.
This might lead to a lot less global travel.
Plastic
There are so many products we use every day that rely
on oil to be produced. For example, plastic wouldn’t
exist without oil. If you think of all the plastic products
you touch every day, you’ll realize what an impact a
plastic-free world would have on your life. From iPh-
one covers to groceries to clothing, there all thousands
of items that contain plastic. Plastic is also used for
medical purposes such as for components in surgical
insertions for hip, knee and heart operations. Plastic is
a very popular material because it’s resilient, versa-
tile and long-lasting. Plastic will become more expen-
sive as it becomes scarcer. As this happens the need
to recycle will become much greater.
A World without Oil By
Sophia Sheldon
Oil reserves in the world
Food
Food today is mass produced, which is mainly possi-
ble through farmers using pesticides and fertiliz-
ers on their crops. If you shop for organic
food you have less choices and higher prices due to
the higher operating costs for organic farmers. How-
ever, pesticides and fertilizers are often oil-based.
Once oil is no longer available, the chemicals we use
to produce the majority of our food may not be avail-
able either. Most people will likely have to change
their eating habits. Higher food prices have already
inspired people to reduce the amount of food they
waste. People will have to adjust the types of meals
they eat such as eating more seasonal foods, reducing
our portion sizes and eating more leftovers.
What if Oil Never Runs Out?
Some believe the world will not run out of oil
for a really long time, if ever. If they’re right, then our
day-to-day lives may not have to change much.
When there is less oil things may become more ex-
pensive, but we would not have to find new sources
of energy. This is how the world has been living for
decades and so far we have not had to make drastic
changes. It’s possible we could continue this way for
a long time but it’s probably smarter to try to find
better sources of energy.
From food and toiletries to transport and medical
procedures, we depend on oil for so much of what we
take for granted today. However, in a hundred years’
time, it is estimated that there will be no more oil
supplies left. A world without oil will change our life
styles greatly. People wouldn’t be able to travel by a
car anymore or have plastic water bottles. We de-
pend on oil so much that the life you live today
wouldn’t be the life you would be able to live without
oil .
The graph shows oil produc-
tion is dropping.

Big oil spills and little oil spills are both a really
big deal if it reaches the ocean. Crude oil
(petroleum) is a thick, black liquid found under
grown. Crude oil is also a fossil fuel that
means it is made naturally from plants and an-
imals that lived millions of years ago. People
need oil because oil heats people homes, and
oil makes cars and boats run. People also need
oil to make plastic, clothing, furniture, cars,
and even food.
You can recycle motor oil. This will keep oil out
of our water ways and ground water simply .
You can reduce your use of fossil fuel by driv-
ing a fuel efficient vehicle and using ener-gy
efficient lighting . Solar and wind power re-
duce the need for oil .

Our World Is Now Greed By Jake Solomito
These pictures show what are land is turning out to be. You would think that our land is ok. We’re
not harming it right? All our land is being destroyed. All the minerals and metals are being re-
moved and there is nothing left but dirt. Was it really worth it? Is this is what our society is turning
out to be? Is a gold ring for Valentine’s Day really worth destroying habitats and Earth’s land.
The mining industry has had a devastating impact on our ecosystems worldwide. Is there any hope
left? People are blowing up are habitats just for gold. No-
body will respect our wildlife anymore. The Pebble mine in
Alaska is big problem in our country. It could damage wil-
derness, wildlife, peo- ple that live there
and even the salmon. They just want to
make a lot of money and don’t care
what it does to our world.
Most people don’t know what it takes to make a gold ring. Twenty tons of rock and soil are taken
just to get enough gold. It takes a lot of energy to mine gold. It produces a lot of waste and pollu-
tion. It ends up in our rivers too.
There is a global campaign to boycott gold. In 2004, the environmental group Earthworks asked
retail companies not to sell gold that was “produced though environmentally and socially destruc-
tive mining practices”. Some of the largest jewelry companies including Tiffany & Co., Target and
Helzberg diamonds don’t sell gold that is mined this way. The goal is to “encourage the metal min-
ing industry to respect human rights and natural environment”.
A lot of people give gold jewelry as gifts for the holidays. On Valentine’s Day jewelry sales go up. “According to a recent survey released by National Jeweler, about 20 percent of Americans who planned buy jewelry- sales estimated to total about 4 billion dollars”. This is why activists think Valentine’s Day is a good time to teach people about mining gold. “The director of Earthworks, Payal Sampat, wants consumers to understand the back story of the gold industry. She believes this would spur an improvement in mining practice”. This is a good place to start. If people stopped buying gold for gifts then companies might not keep blowing up our land. It would help to keep our land safe and clean one step at a time. This one difference in our life can help so many others.
These maps show were the miners destroy our world.
Oil Drilling Effects
By Niko Ginis
People all around the world are using oil. They use oil to fuel their cars, heat
their homes, and even cook their food. But that oil had to be drilled out of the
ground. When oil is drilled out of the ground there are effects. These effects can be
dangerous to the environment, to people and even animals.
Oil drilling can be very dangerous to the environment in many different ways.
Some of these ways are. When drilling you need to use a metal pipe. Like a lot of
other materials metal corrodes. Corrode means to get old and rusty and brakes.
When this happens the oil leaks out into environment and causes harmful effects.
Like polluting the water in that environment. Also destroying trees and plants.
Oil drilling is not just harmful to the environment it’s also harmful to people.
Drinking contaminated water can result in fainting spells, vomiting, headaches, and
various types of cancer. Also breathing in the harmful gas can cause cancer and also
lung disease and sometimes even death. And I know
what you’re thinking but no not that kind of gas.
Oil is also harmful to animals. Now it’s not going
to be like in some movies where radiation causes ani-
mals an extra head or something like that. Animals
have a weaker immune system than people so oil can
affect them easier. Like if a fish is swimming in oil filled water and opens his mouth
he will most likely die. Even though some animals are very strong it’s hard for them
to fight. Also animals are not as smart as humans so it’s a lot harder for them to tell
whether or not water is polluted. And even if they do see the difference they proba-
bly won’t know what it means so they will just eat or drink the contaminated food
or water.
These are the terrible effects that oil drilling brings to animals, environments,
and even people. A lot of these effects are very dangerous to anyone and anything.
So the next time you use something oil related maybe you will appreciate it more.
When you hear about gas tanks what
do you think of? Is it good? Is it bad? Many
gas tanks leak around the world. It is a big
problem.
Does oil get in our groundwater?
Many people around the world proba-
bly know that when gas tanks leak it is bad.
That is true, but does everyone know that
when gas tanks leak it can get in earths
groundwater. If people drink this water it will
cause health risks such as cancer and
organ damage. A leak as small as ten gallons
in an underground tank can contaminate up
to twelve million gallons of our precious drink-
ing water. This takes water away from people
to drink.
Gas tank spills and their expense.
When gas tanks leak, they need to be
cleaned up. When gas tanks need to be
cleaned up it is a problem because it is very
expensive. When people have to clean the oil
up from the leak of the gas tanks it costs more
than $73 million. Many people in the world
don’t want to pay that much money.
Do we know when gas tanks leak?
There are so many gas tanks that leak
without people even realizing it. About 50% of
gas tanks leak all the time around the world.
When this happens usually gas tanks have to
close down until everything is fixed and
cleaned up. When this happens it usually
takes a while for the gas tanks to open up
again.
Does gas tank leaks effect the environ-
ment?
When gas tanks leak it is a problem un-
derground. It is effecting the soil under-
ground.it is also effecting the environment.
This is not good because we need soil for
many reasons. If this
continues the envi-
ronment will be con-
taminated.
Gas tanks leak
because of what con-
tainers they are in.
When the tanks are
put underground
they corrode
quickly they are unprotected in the soil. The
tanks rust and then they crack. This is not
good. Things must be done so the tanks stop
leaking.
Gas tank leaks are very bad for the envi-
ronment. It effects the world in many ways. It
effects our groundwater, it is very expensive
to clean up, and it is effecting the soil under-
ground and the environment. Many people
don’t realize how bad it is when gas tanks
leak. Gas tank leaks is a very bad thing for the
environment and it needs to stop soon.

Where is the Water ? by Thomas Clark
We need water right. Then why do we pollute this essential resource .Water pollution happens
when pollution goes under ground and goes in our ground water. Water pollution always happens when
pollution goes into the ground and goes into an aquifer full of water. Water pollution can cause birth
defects and cancer.
The issue
New Mexico gets 90% of their water from ground water. The governor
of New Mexico allows the copper industry to pollute this essential re-
source. This state has become increasingly dependent on ground water.
New Mexico is running out of water. Since the copper rule has been
adopted the dairy industry and other industries want the same ability to
change ground water standards. The Copper Rule will allow Copper and
Gold Inc. to pollute ground water within a nine-square mile of the Tyrone
mine. While you find fertilizers, presides and other chemicals helpful but
much of their volume is being washed off your lawn and into the nearest
waterway.
Pollution solution
With New Mexico having a pollution problem the simplest action any of us can do to protect our
water supplies and materials is to not pollute the water in the first place. Another solution is to make
filters and filter out the dirty chemicals. One last solution is to get rid of the Copper Rule.
Water pollution is a big environmental problem. If we don’t choose to
help the environment and our ground water our society will crumble. We need
water to survive, just imagine a world without clean water. What will happen
when it rains and in that rain is pollution it will be like having a polluted shower.
Gallons of polluted water dumped into
our environment.
The keystone pipeline a proposed
1,179 mile pipeline that would
cross the United States and Canada
border. The pipe would run from oil
sand in Alberta Canada to steel city
Nebraska. The pipeline would be
built by
Trans
Canada
corp
There
are many things that are bad about
the keystone pipeline. First of all
the pipeline would be made out of
tar sand which is vulnerable to leak.
Also dangerous but not the most
dangerous way to transport oil. Al-
so critics of the pipeline are fond of
saying that the pipeline would carry
the dirtiest oil on the planet! The
oil will be significantly dirty. An av-
erage of 97,376 barrels of petrole-
um and other hazardous liquid have
been spilled in pipeline incidents
over the last decade. That is why
the pipeline is bad.
There are many good things about
things about the keystone pipeline.
First of all it will create more jobs in
the United States. The U.S. state de-
partment estimates 42,100 jobs
would be added during construc-
tion. there would be 1,950 jobs
added per year. Also some advo-
cates have claimed the key stone
project would hold down gas prices
in the U.S. that is why the key stone
pipeline is good.
There are many good and bad
things about the keystone pipeline.
