Class- 5 English Worksheet-3
DEGREES OF ADJECTIVES
What are adjectives? Adjectives are words that are used to describe,
identify, modify or quantify nouns or pronouns.
For example, red, quick, happy and careless are
adjectives because they can describe things:
(a) A red hat. (b) The quick rabbit.
(c) A happy child. (d) A careless student.
Every adjective has its three degrees.
1. Positive adjective – It is the basic form of an adjective. This degree offers no comparison. It is also called the absolute degree.
Examples: Rich, pretty, handsome, good, less etc.
-
2. Comparative adjective – It is used to show the characteristic of a noun or a pronoun in comparison to another thing. It makes comparison between not
more than two things.
Words like “than” and “to” are used after a comparative adjective in a sentence to show comparison of the two things.
Examples: a) A bus is bigger than a car.
b) She is cleverer than him.
3. Superlative adjective – It is used to show the characteristic of a noun or a pronoun in comparison to many other things. This degree expresses highest
intensity of a thing in comparison to other things.
Words like “of” and “in” are used after a superlative degree in the sentence.
An article “the” should be used before a superlative degree when modifying a particular noun.
Examples: a) Sara is the most talkative girl in the family.
b) He is the richest man in the town.
I. Fill in the blanks with the correct degree of adjectives from the brackets.

Class – 5 Science Worksheet - 3 DISEASES
Diseases can be broadly classified into two types: non-communicable and
communicable. Some non-communicable diseases are: night blindness - caused by the
deficiency of vitamin A, beriberi - caused by the deficiency of vitamin B1, scurvy -
caused by the deficiency of vitamin C, rickets - caused by the deficiency of vitamin D,
goitre - caused by the deficiency of iodine and anaemia - caused by the deficiency of
iron in food. Communicable diseases are caused by germs and may spread through air,
infected food and water, direct contact, cuts in the skin, or insect bites. Proper hygiene
and vaccination prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Our body needs
balanced diet, protection from diseases, regular exercise and enough rest to keep fit.
Question1 Fill in the blanks: a) Diseases are broadly of two types _______ and _______ diseases.
b) Anaemia is caused by the deficiency of _______ in food.
c) Our body needs _______, protection from diseases, regular exercise and ________
to keep fit.
d) Proper hygiene and_______ prevent the spread of communicable diseases.
e) Communicable diseases are caused by _________.
Question 2 Match the following: a) Vitamin A i) Beriberi
b) Vitamin B1 ii) Typhoid
c) Communicable disease iii) Rickets
d) Vitamin D iv) Scurvy
e) Vitamin C v) Night blindness
PROJECT (SCIENCE)
Check the packet of common salt being used in your kitchen. Is the salt iodized?
Find out more about the need to add iodine to your daily consumption of salt. Name
the disease caused by the deficiency of iodine in your diet. Name the gland in your
throat that swells up due to this disease. Make a poster or advertisement for iodised
salt.

Class: V Computer Worksheet-2
Topic: Evolution of Computers The term „Computer‟ is derived from the word, „compute‟ which means to calculate; but a computer is not limited to perform only calculations. A computer is a
versatile device that can handle different applications at
the same time.
The present day computer is entirely different from the
earlier devices that were invented for doing calculations. Let us glance through the
major milestones in the journey leading to the evolution of present day computer.
History of Computers:
The need to keep a track of numbers, led to the invention of different calculating
devices. Right from Abacus (the first counting device), many devices are invented,
leading to the development of computers.
Early Calculating Devices:
1) 3000-BC ABACUS:
The first mechanical device for calculations, developed in China. It was made up of wooden frame
with rods, each having beads.
The frame is divided into two parts - Heaven and Earth.
Each rod in Heaven has 2 beads and each rod in Earth has 5 beads.
It was used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
2) PASCAL’S CALCULATOR: Blaise Pascal, a French
mathematician
invented an adding machine called Pascal‟s Calculator or Pascaline, at the age of 19, in
the year 1642.
It uses gears, wheels and dials. Numbers were displayed by
rotating the
wheels.
It was capable of performing addition and subtraction.
3) LEIBNIZ CALCULATOR:
-
Leibniz, the famous German mathematician improved on Pascal‟s machine in 1671, Leibniz calculator was mechanical device.
Apart from performing addition and subtraction, Leibniz calculator could even do multiplication, division, and find square roots.
4) DIFFERENCE ENGINE & ANAYLTICAL ENGINE: Charles Babbage, a British mathematician, is
considered as the father of computers.
He invented a working model of mechanical computer, called Difference Engine in 1822 and
an Analytical Engine in 1833.
The Analytical Engine had five units – Input, Output, Store, Mill and Control.
These units worked like the modern computer. All the computers which are used nowadays, are based
on it.
Store was used for storing data and Mill was the Calculating unit.
Control unit was used for supervising all the units.
5) BOOLEAN LOGIC: George Boole was an English
mathematician.
Complex mathematical problems can be solved by
reducing them to a series of questions having either
positive or negative answers.
He linked them with binary number system where
positive results represented by 1 and negative results
represented by 0.
The theory of Boolean Logic became fundamental principle for the design of computer circuitry.
6) TABULATING MACHINE:
Herman Hollerith, an American statistician, invented the machine called Tabulating
machine.
It was capable of reading data, processing it, and giving the desired output.
The input was given through punched cards. The punched cards were used to record and
store data or information.
-
7) MARK I:
Howard Aiken was the primary engineer in IBM,
who developed the first automatic sequence-
controlled calculator, the Mark-I in 1944.
It was capable of executing long computations
automatically.
8) ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer):
The first general purpose electronic digital computer.
It was invented by John Mauchly and J Presper Eckert in 1946.
It consisted of 18,000 vaccum tubes and was 1000 times faster than the
Mark-I.
It could add two large numbers in 200 microseconds.
9) EDSAC (Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator):
Designed by Professor Sir Maurice Wilkes at the University of Cambridge on May 6, 1949.
This computer ran the first graphical computer game, nicknamed „Baby‟.
10) EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer):
It is a modern type of computer came into existence with Jon von Neumann‟s development of software, written in binary code.
It was an improved version of ENIAC. It was built using binary code in 1950. EDVAC‟S concept of storing different
programs on punched cards led to the advancement of
computers that we know today.
11) UNIVAC-I (Universal Automatic Computer-I):
It was the world‟s first commercially available computer. It was designed by J Presper Eckert and John Mauchly in 1951. It was the first computer to handle both numeric and text data. It was also the first computer that was equipped with magnetic tape unit and
used the buffer memory.
