Methodology
This report includes information on the 472 students from the traditional residential program
who earned a degree at one of the 2013 conferrals: January, May, and August. Of the 472
degrees awarded, there were 450 bachelor’s degrees and 22 master’s degrees. Information for
this survey was collected from multiple sources. Students provided preliminary information on
a survey distributed prior to their commencement and were surveyed again approximately one
year post-graduation. Additional information was provided by academic departments, the
National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and LinkedIn. Through this process, responses
were collected from 84% of the 2013 graduates.
Outlook for 2013 Graduates
As our students prepared for graduation, the Economic Policy Institute (Shierholz, Sabadish, &
Finio, 2013) published a report showing elevated rates of both unemployment and
underemployment among young adults across the United States. However, it is clear that
young adults with a college degree continue to fare much better in the job market than those
without a college degree. As the following chart from the Pew Research Center (2013)
illustrates, today’s young adults with a bachelor’s degree earn, on average, $17,000 more per
year than their peers without a college degree. This earnings gap is far bigger than it was for
prior cohorts of young adults, including the parents of today’s graduates (see also ‘6 Key
Findings About Going to College’). Over a typical work span of 40-45 years, a college degree can
yield as much as $600,000-$1 million more in earnings.

The 2013 graduates of Elizabethtown College performed well in the challenging marketplace
they faced following graduation. The unique Elizabethtown blend of liberal arts and
professional programs prepares students with the skills and experiences desired in today’s
workforce. The 2013 Job Outlook Survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and
Employers found that employers rated “ability to communicate with persons inside and outside
the organization” as the most important skill for new hires. This was followed by “ability to
work in a team structure” and “ability to make decisions and solve problems.” Elizabethtown
College graduates have these skills, fostered, in part, by participation in various Real-World
Learning experiences embedded throughout their college experience.
Signature Learning Experiences Prior to Graduation
The chart shows the percentage of 2013 graduates with each of five signature high-impact
learning practices. In addition, it shows that ALL graduates participated in high impact first-year
programming including a seminar, advising, orientation, and mentoring. As well, ALL graduates
also completed at least one guided writing and research intensive (GWR) course in addition to
completing a first-year writing and research course.
Note: This chart uses the new criteria for the five Signature Learning Experiences, approved by Academic Council
and Faculty Assembly in 2014.

Theatre.

Primary Post-Graduate Status
2013 Alums One-Year-Out
A year after graduation, just over half (55%) of the class of 2013 are employed and 26% are
pursuing advanced study. A handful of graduates indicated that they were actively seeking
employment and a small number indicated that they spent their first year after college
graduation engaged in full-time service or mission work or in an internship. Among those 2013
graduates who sought and obtained employment, 82% reported securing their position before
or within 6 months after graduation and 78% reported that their first employment was directly
related to their college major. Nationally, 37% of recent college graduates are employed in
positions that do not require a college degree (Sum, Center for Labor Market Studies at
Northeastern University, 2013). In comparison, a smaller percentage (23%) of 2013
Elizabethtown College graduates report being ‘mal-employed’ for their first position after
college; the majority of new Elizabethtown College graduates are hired in positions that require
a bachelor’s degree as the minimum level of education.
