What is Clean Cities?

Clean Cities advances the nation's economic, environmental, and energy security by supporting local actions to reduce petroleum consumption in transportation. A national network of nearly 90 Clean Cities coalitionsbring together stakeholders in the public and private sectors to deploy alternative and renewable fuels, idle‐reduction measures, fuel economy improvements, and emerging transportation technologies.

1/3 – Southeastern Project Examples: Propane School Buses  Propane school buses are a natural 

fit; removes headaches  Almost 10,000 propane school 

buses on U.S. roads today, over 9,000 of those are BB/ROUSH

MANY school districts are seeing the MANY advantages of propane

Right propane price equals great ROI

Mobile County Public School System – Started with 30 propane school buses in 2014

2/3 – Southeastern Project Examples: DeKalb County/Metro. ATL AF and Adv. Tech. Project 

The region gained: a landfill gas conversion facility to produce renewable energy at a DeKalb 

County landfill, five publicly accessible Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling stations, &  one upgraded CNG station to accommodate additional CNG fueling 

capacity. 

More than 200 alternative fuel and                                                                            advanced technology vehicles have also                                                                    been deployed by Metro Atlanta‐based                                                               companies, as well as city and county                                                                   governments.

1/3 – What’s coming? Renewable Diesel

Three main producers in the World:  Neste, REGI, Diamond Green (Valero) A true drop‐in fuel – no changes or cleaning to systems West Coast experience is it relieves many aftertreament problems

Fleets adopting renew. diesel:  CA:  Sacramento & Contra 

Costa Counties, Carlsbad  OR:  Corvalis, Eugene Water 

& Electric Board NYC:  Starting test

2/3 – What’s coming? Terminal Truck Stop Electrification (TSE)  TSE has been mostly focused on 

truck stops over the past decade plus, but is seeing growth in trucking company terminals

Offers less‐costly option, quiet sleep and power/amenities

Covenant Trucking – Completed installation of 20 units last year thanks to U.S. EPA Region 4 grant, and usage is growing!

3/3 – What’s coming? Electric Terminal Trucks 

100% electric Class 8 EVs for container handling operations Both new and remanufactured options

Capital intensive, but…   zero tailpipe emissions,Significantly reduced noise in an Already noisy area, and ROI proven in CA fleets.
