What is The Cloud? What is cloud computing?

What is Cloud Computing? It is not a Technology Revolution but

rather a business and process evolution.

It is about how we use technologies.

Revolution Evolution of Cloud Computing

Data processing and decisions kept to a select few

A long long time ago… (1970)

Raised-floorData Center

Dumb TerminalPeople accessed large

mainframe computers through devices referred toAs dumb terminals. These terminals were primarily sources for data to be passed to and from the mainframe where the data was processed.

Revolution Evolution of Cloud Computing

Move data processing, decision making to the masses in a controlled way

In the 1980s Client/Server Was Born

Client/Server

An architecture in which the user's PC (the client) is the requesting machine and the server is the supplying machine, both of which are connected via a local area network (LAN) or wide area network (WAN). Throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s, client/server was the hot buzzword as applications were migrated from centralized minicomputers and mainframes to networks of desktop computers.

Revolution Evolution of Cloud Computing

Move data processing, decision making, and collaboration to everyone

And Now in 2011 it’s Cloud ComputingWhat is Cloud Computing?Cloud computing is the delivery of information technology services over the internet at a dramatically lower cost and with dynamic scalability. The cloud concept incorporates software as a service (SaaS) as well as other recent technology trends satisfying the computing needs of users via the internet. Examples include Salesforce.com and Google Apps which provide common business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data are stored on the servers.

Transition Periods

Mainframe ClientServer

Cloud ComputingTransition Transition

Technology transitions occur all the time and are expected – During transitional periods end-users require the most help and rely on external expertise.

Through transitional periods the most effective service companies do not take a position on which technology is best. Instead they take the best position for their customer and provide the most effective support to transition at the right time the right way.

Opportunities for service providers are better after a transition then before as the marketplaceIs less knowledgeable and new services are created.

Service Providers who do not evolve through the transitional period are at risk.

Cloud Computing has all 3

• Scalability to do more with less• Greater IT availability needs• A need for lower IT costs• Increased IT & data regulation• Access anywhere, anytime (downtime

tolerance is decreasing)

• Cloud application acceptance• Prolific use of mobile technology• Outsourcing and strategic partnerships• Dynamic upgrading of applications expected• Consumer demands driving business requirements

• Server and desktop virtualization• Cheap and high quality bandwidth• Greater data security• Parallel processing • Storage capability up and cost down

What is Virtualization?

Confidential – © CMIT Solutions, Inc. Confidential – © CMIT Solutions, Inc.

Virtualization“The creation of a virtual (rather than actual) version

of something, such as a hardware platform, operating system, a storage device or network resources… in hardware virtualization, a hypervisor (a piece of software) imitates a computer hardware.”

NIST Definition Encompasses:• 3 Service Models:

– Software as a service (SaaS)– Platform as a service– Infrastructure as a service

• 4 Deployment Models:– Public cloud– Private cloud– Community cloud– Hybrid

Public Cloud• Public cloud. The cloud infrastructure is

made available to the general public or a large industry group and is owned by an organization selling cloud services.

Shared platform, utility billing (i.e. Google Apps, Microsoft BPOS, Rackspace Cloud Servers)

Private Cloud• Private cloud. The cloud infrastructure is

operated solely for an organization. It may be managed by the organization or a third party (hosted private cloud) and may exist on premise or off premise.

Dedicated virtualized platform (i.e. Zenith Smart Style, Rackspace Dedicated Cloud)

Community Cloud• Community cloud. The cloud infrastructure is

shared by several organizations and supports a specific community that has shared concerns (e.g., mission, security requirements, policy, and compliance considerations). It may be managed by the organizations or a third party and may exist on premise or off premise.

Creating a cloud for one group (i.e. Google Gov cloud, educational institutions)

Hybrid cloud• Hybrid cloud. The cloud infrastructure is a

composition of two or more clouds (private, community, or public) that remain unique entities but are bound together by standardized or proprietary technology that enables data and application portability (e.g., cloud bursting for load-balancing between clouds).

Joining clouds together for high traffic, load balancing, intense processing (i.e. larger enterprise?)

Cloud Definition"Cloud computing is a model for enabling

convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.“ (NIST.gov)

Larry Ellison on Cloud Computing

“All the Cloud is, is computers in a network….Our industry is so bizarre. I mean, they just change a term and they think they’ve invented technology.”

Cloud ExampleCloud computing describes a new supplement, consumption, and delivery model for IT services based on Internet protocols, and it typically involves provisioning of dynamically scalable and often virtualized resources.

Marc Benioff on Cloud Computing

"Our definition of cloud computing is multi-tenant, it's faster, half the cost, pay as you go, it grows as you grow or shrinks as you shrink. It is extremely efficient."
