2.

Ants are insects. Ants dig tunnels in the ground or in wood. Most ants have no wings. More ants live on our earth than any other kind of insect.

4.

All insect bodies have three parts. The head has jaws for eating, eyes for seeing, and antennae for hearing and smelling.

6.

Insects have six legs attached to their thorax. Food passes through the thorax on the way to the ant’s abdomen.

8.

Inside the abdomen are the stomach and the crop stomach. Ants can store food in the crop and feed other ants from it.

10.

Ants live in large groups or colonies. Every ant in the colony has a job. The queen ant lays eggs. She rules the whole colony. The eggs are carried to the nursery by the worker ants.

12.

Worker ants also care for the larvae that hatch from the eggs. The larvae spin cocoons and change into ants. Workers help the young ants from the cocoons.

14.

Ants eat plants and other insects. When ants find another insect, they bite it and spray it. Then they cut it up and carry it back to the colony for the other ants to eat.

16.

An ant can pass food from its crop stomach to another ant. Some ants store food in their crop and hang upside down. Then other ants come to eat the food.

18.

Ants also pass on messages from the queen ant that tells them what job to do. Worker ants get messages from the queen by licking her.

20.

Ants live in groups just like people. They help each other with food and houses. They defend each other from enemies. Ants are a lot like us.
