Vision Statement

The College ofEducation is committedto indigenous,intercultural, andinternational teaching,learning, research andservice experiences forall students, facultyand staff.

• Encouraging students, faculty and staff to view indigenous, intercultural and international teaching and learning experiences as opportunities to challenge their own world view, values and beliefs.

• Travel and other teaching, learning and research experiences associated with indigenous, intercultural, and international activities holds intrinsic value for student development (transformations), funds will be sought to support the travel of all students on a needs basis.

• Indigenous, intercultural, and international teaching and learning experiences should be assessed for the accomplishment of the value proposed for the specific project, as well as for its match with the University’s Vision and Global Education Strategic Plan and the COE’s Vision and Global Education Vision.  

GOALS

Increase indigenous, intercultural andinternational teachingand learning experiencesfor students that alignwith the College ofEducation’s missionand vision.

GOAL 1:

OBJECTIVE 1.1:

Invite the Center forInternational Studies tomake regular and ongoingpresentations onInternational Universitiesincluding where we havepartnership agreements.

Explore the possibility of expanding the university-wide International Studies Committee to include greater representation from the COE, including students.

OBJECTIVE 1.2:

Invite yearly inservice updates from the Center for International Studies (CIS) and the International Studies Committee (ISC) for the departments in the COE, including clarification on the roles of the CIS and ISC.

Develop an addendum toSCSU Policies andProcedures Manual toinclude indigenous,intercultural, andinternational teaching,learning, research andservice experiences.

Promote faculty member support and flexibility in program requirements and scheduling for students who are in approved university sponsored indigenous, intercultural and international teaching, learning, research and service experiences.

Utilize a tool to prioritize proposed indigenous, intercultural, and international teaching and learning opportunities for COE students.

Collaborate with the Officeof Clinical Experience todevelop and implementindigenous, intercultural,international teaching andlearning experiences forstudents.

Explore, in partnership with Center for International Studies, two levels of program development:

1) Sustainable long term programs, and

2) Opportunistic/discovery program experiences that can be approved and implemented in an expedited manner.

Develop Masters of Science in indigenous, intercultural, and international critical pedagogy housed in the College of Education.

Each department/programshould develop study abroadrecommendations for theirmajors that allow studentsto complete indigenous,intercultural andinternational experiencewithout delaying graduation.

Promote the expectation among our students and faculty that students, regardless of socio-economic status and degree, will have an indigenous, intercultural and international experience.

Develop plan to raise external funding to off-set costs associated with indigenous, intercultural and international experiences for students.

OBJECTIVE 2.1:

Build into searches for new faculty, staff, and administrators the preference for people with evidence of indigenous, intercultural, and international experience, critical analysis and multiple languages. Recommend that this be standard language for job postings and positiondescriptions for all COE positions.

Incorporate facultyoutcomes into theacademic plan for RPTprocess that are linkedto global education andexperience that reflectsthe COE vision andwork.

Explore the development of an Institute or Center in the COE for Global Education.

Explore ways to expandoptions for staff to gainindigenous, intercultural andinternational experiencethat strengthen faculty’sability in critical analysis ofcurrent issues in the worldrelevant to our students.

To increase and promoteinternationalization of thecurriculum within the COE.

Encourage all majors and minors to have a focus on substantive indigenous, intercultural and international experiences that align with our COE Global Vision.

OBJECTIVE 3.1:

Work with the General Education Committee in promoting the consideration for including a global education course designation in the Multicultural, Gender and Minority MGM (human relations) requirements, transitioning to MGMG Multicultural, Gender, Minority and Global requirements.

OBJECTIVE 3.2:

Advocate for a world language requirement for graduation for students in COE that includes opportunities in critical languages.

OBJECTIVE 3.3:

Advocate the inclusion of aGlobal requirement thatincludes an indigenous, intercultural, andinternational teaching andlearning experiences for allmajors from the COE.
