Arms Race-- a competition between countries for superiority in the number and power of weapons held. During the Cold War the arms race was between the United States and the USSR
Berlin Wall--a wall built by the Soviet Union separating East Berlin from West Berlin

Cold War--a period of rivalry between the Soviet Union and the United States that lasted more than 40 years
Iron Curtain--a term used to describe the division of Europe between the western nations supported by the United States and the eastern nations supported by the Soviet Union

Marshall Plan--the decision by the United States to provide money and supplies to help rebuild Europe
NATO– (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) a military alliance of democratic states between the United States and the nations of Western Europe

Superpowers--specifically the United States and the Soviet Union, strong nations capable of influencing many other countries
Warsaw Pact—a military alliance of the Soviet Union and the nations of Eastern Europe
Cold War Vocabulary:
Common Market—a group of nations that cooperates to make trade among members easier.
European Union—(EU) is an organization that promotes political and economic cooperation in Europe
Mikhail Gorbachev—appointed the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. He expanded basic freedoms for USSR citizens. His reforms helped bring an end to communism in the USSR.
