About the authorBorn in Porto, Manuel Lapierre fell in love with the photographic image at a very early age, encouraged by his father, a photography enthusiast who built a black and white processing lab at home. In the early 70’s, he embraced a range of studies and became an assistant to a photographer who had a visionary consciousness in his approach to his work, leading him to develop his perception of reality.

Manuel became a professional photographer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil whilst studying communication and was awarded the best photographer in his year. Now residing in Portugal he is a freelance photographer working with latent forms, he also produces and performs in short films.

The concept of latency in photography presupposes the existence of an invisible image which only emerges after developing. Based on this concept, and with careful observation, Manuel Lapierre finds Latency in diverse surfaces and textures such as walls, water, nature, fire and marble. The latency in these surfaces, behave in a similar manner to that of a photograph, developing over time. After shooting the subject he develops each image using a digital imaging process created by himself for this purpose.

Manuel’s work has been exhibited throughout Portugal and is in many private collections.
