About Philip Tyers:
Philip Tyers is Afro-Zen Furniture Designer.
He lives, breathes and creates it for clients across the world; providing them with niche and up-market spaces which
symbolize Africa and the tribal aesthetic thereof.
Philip Tyers qualified as a fashion designer from the Cape Peninsula Technikon, only to realize that his passion lay with
interior design and furniture manufacture. He translated his skills for fashion and design into the ability to work with
natural and organic products to create oversized, bold pieces of furniture.
Colonial House Design was started by Philip and his partner and wife; Nicky, 10 years ago on Long Street. As the brand
has evolved to be more up-market, niche and tribal; the showroom was moved to the appropriate setting of the Cape
Quarter – the heart of design in Cape Town.
CHD provided the platform for Philip to branch out and create his own range, Philip Tyers Furniture Collection; translating
the African tribal aesthetic into functional design.
He has extensive experience in the boutique hospitality market as well as the trendy nightlife scene; having been
commissioned to design and style a number of leading night clubs in Cape Town. Philip believes it is essential that each
piece of completed furniture carries a soul and has emotion; which helps create a vibe and feel for a room – whether it’s
the glam of a night club, the tranquillity of an outdoor lounge or a commercial space – design is paramount.
