Students visit the local Sewage Treatment Plant

On Monday the 31st of January the students of the 5th and 6th grade visited the local Sewage Treatment Plant which is situated near the village of Marathokampos .It was a good opportunity for them to see the procedure up close. Mr Chartofillis, who is responsible for the plant, was kind enough to guide the students through the plant and to explain its various functions

• Domestic wastewater is first collected in undergound reservoirs in the area of Ormos, which is a fishing village near Marathokampos village. The wastewater is then pumped up to the sewage plant which is situated in an area outside the village

• The sewage plant is in an area far from any houses

• This is where the drainage filters are and here is where the raw material is filtered

• This is the second phase of filtration where the centrifugal sifter is used to remove the solid materials

The waste is kept in reservoirs with cells where it is prepared for the biodiscs

• The fluid waste is stored here where the biodiscs clean the waste and remove all the harmful elements

This is the drainage reservoir where the sun filters the last waste

Storage tank where the water for irrigation is kept

This is the control panel of the plant. This controls the amount of waste that enters the plant and controls the pumps and biodiscs

A second control panel monitors the amount of waste and checks how much of it has been treated

The outcome of the whole procedure is pure water which can be used for irrigation

• The students learned first hand how waste can be treated in an environmentally friendly way.

• They realized the importance of recycling waste and learned that water is valuable and something to preserve
